On a totally stock first gen, what is the biggest tire & rim combination I can run? I want to put 18s on it, but 17s would work. What kind of work am I looking at if I wanted to put 275 wide tires on 17s in front, and 315s on 17s in back? I want this car to be a pro-touring car and hit the magic 1g eventually.

Both front and rear will rub. You need to stick with a 245/45 or 255/45 front tire on an 8" rim up front, and no bigger than a 275/40 on a 9.5" rim on the rear unless you mini-tub.

How much backspacing are we talking about here? That matters a lot too.

On the front 17X8's use 4.75-5.25" b.s. 5" or 5.25" helps if the car is pretty low. I have 4.75" with no problems and it's lowered.

The rears like 5.5"

in the rear i have 275/60/15's all i did was raise the rear end about 2 inches. and put in stiffer springs. it only rubs if i got 2 people in the back and hit a big bump. besides that no problems. i also have my battery in my trunk. and i have 255's up front. they dont rub and never did.
