carb trouble

the car is a 83 olds cutlass with a 305 sbc. it is bone stock, belongs to my mom. i have no experience with carbs other then driving my 79 TA and pulling out the carbed motor LOL.

anywho, the car acts funny when your on the gas, it kinda acts like its starving for fuel, it will jerk, sometimes stall. kinda like its running out of fuel. now my 79 did the exact same thing but it was a lot worse and would stall all the time. i got sick of it and eventually just parked it and pulled the motor out of it. but this time that is not an option.

a buddy mentioned that the same thing happened to his nova a while back and it turned out to be a fuel filter in the carb, i did not know that carbs had filters too is this true? on my 79 i changed the fuel pump, and filter and still no difference. so if there is a fuel filter on the carb can anyone please clarify?

a mechanic suggested that the carb be replaced, but i fail to see how a carb would go bad and need to have the whole thing replaced. please help, thanks.

Re: carb trouble

The quadrajet carbs do have a internal filter where the fuel line hooks to the carb. It can be either a fuel starvation problem or a ignition problem. Im guessing it has an HEI. Pull the cap and check out the cap and rotor. I have heard of the mechanical fuel pumps getting weak but I have never seen it first hand. Does it run good at everything except WOT? I had a 91 siverado that ran great at every throttle position except WOT. It turned out to be a valve in the air cleaner intake was stuck closed. It drove me nuts tring to figure it out! It will most likely be something small and simple.

Re: carb trouble

Sintered Bronze element in the carb where the fuel line goes in. Remove it and spray out the cavity with parts cleaner. Replace filter, Its a $10 fix.
