CAM question

I have trouble deciding between two different camshafts:

1.) Comp Cams Xtreme Energy Camshaft, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 268/280, Lift .477/.480, Chevy Small Block, CS XE268H-10

2.) Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 308/318, Lift .488/.510, Chevy, Small Block

Which one should I choose to get the most out of my 377 Chevy, considering I've got Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap intake manifold?

Do I have to include lifters kit in my order or can I use the ones that are already in my engine (NEW P.A.W. Hydraulic )?

If I choose Edelbrock CAM, that's got .510 exh lift, is it necessary to aquire guide plates and different valve springs?

Help...

Re: CAM question

Lifters are made by only a couple of companies, so the cam companies all buy from them and put their name on them. Go ahead and use the ones you have. The rep on the edelbrock cam is that the ramps are kind of lazy. Comp Xtremes have much quicker ramps, but there have been a lot of complaints on the net about them wiping out cam lobes. Comp warranties the failures, but by the time you consider all that goes into a cam swap, not much comfort. And use of any lifters other than theirs voids the warranties.

As to which cam would be best, depends on the rest of your engine/vehicle combination. You do need to match springs to the cam as per what the cam maker recommends.

Re: CAM question

what car is the engine going in what heads (flow chart if avalible) how much does the car weigh what trany and gears. what is the intended use of the car. is this a stroked 350 or a D-stroked 400? I know of 4 XE comp cams local that have been running for over a year with no failures one is in my truck.

Re: CAM question

This is stroked 350 engine with 4.000« Bore and 3.750« Stroke for my 3.gen Camaro.

I'll have Edelbrock RPM AirGap intake manifold, Holley 650 CFM double pumper with mechanical secondaries, forget crank, forget pistons, forget rods, Hooker competition 1 5/8 tube full length headers, manual trans…
Rear gear in my Camaro is still original as he was in new 5.0 TPI Camaro'87.

CYLINDER HEADS: NEW World Products SR 67cc cylinder heads with 2.02 intake & 1.60 exhaust. Heads feature brand new World Products castings, new SSI stainless valves, new chrome moly retainers, new valve stem seals, new hardened valve locks, new performance valve springs which will handle up to .500 lift hydraulic camshaft. Hardened exhaust seats, new screw in studs, 3-angle valve job, 7 bolt exhaust flange.

Are my listed valve springs right for the Edelbrock's cam (listed in my first post) or not? Should i order guide plates or are they not necessary?

Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 308/318, Lift .488/.510, Chevy, Small Block

Which combination od pistons and heads should i order?

L-2304F Dome forget pistons with 67cc Head 10.7 Apx. Comp. Ratio)
or
L-2304F Dome forget pistons with 76cc Heads = 9.8 Apx. Comp. Ratio)
or
Flat top forget pistons with 67cc Heads = 9.9 Apx. Comp. Ratio
or
Flat top forget pistons with 76cc Heads = 9.3 Apx. Comp. Ratio

And some important details:
- In my country we use 95 octane gas, so that's gonna make my engine run...
- In near future I plan to install N2O sistem (NOS or NX)
- That is in fact my second, something like a "hobby" car and is not used for everyday purpouses, but mainly for drag races and sunday cruises. It's milage will be low.

Re: CAM question

for the cam the rpm is the better of the two but I would recomend the XE274-H comp cam it has excelent power and likes N20

the head and piston choice use the flat top's and the 67 cc chambers. flat tops have better flame travel and make more power than a small dome in a bigger chamber.

if you havn't ordered the heads yet I would consider these heads they make a lot more power http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4838998+309095

if you decide on the sr's the guideplates are not needed.

Re: CAM question

hmmm...

I find these heads interesting.

BTW: You send me link to 64cc heads with 2.02 int and 1.6 exh. DRT-10311111

I think that theese heads are the same as you suggest but with 72cc Chamber Volume: DRT-10421111 (and the same price).

Re: CAM question

On Chevytalk forum I've read some posts that some people were having problems with this cam.

Here's a copy/paste:
»You may have a problem with the camshaft / rod bolt clearance depending on the cam and lift.«
"I was told that there is a special grind camshaft for my application."
(I'm building a stroked 350 (377) chevy small block engine with Dart iron eagle Cylinder heads...)

Can you give me any more specific information regarding this matter, for me to get the right camshaft for my application...

Re: CAM question

some cams have to be ground on a small base circle or the rods clearanced to keep them from hitting the cam I have seen this cam installed in a 383 with stock rods and no problems though but I would have your engine builder check to make shure. or just have the rods clearanced before assembly.

Re: CAM question

I will also go for xe 274 over 268, and if its weekend only you might go slightly bigger.we just had a 268 in a 350[nope didnt wipe lobes but we were meticulous about break in] and it was great but didnt have as much top end as i thought, though the heads were'nt good at all.with 95 octane 9.9 wont be a problem with medium sized cams like these.I prefer a flat top with a smaller chamber to a dome with a larger chamber, so i would go flat tops+64ccs. You shouldnt need a small base circle with that size cam, just check it when youre building it
my 2 cents
EDIT just noticed in other post you have an imposed 6k rpm limit then the 268 will do fine.

Re: CAM question

OK guys, thanks again for your answers, you've been very helpful...

I've made my order - here's a list of components:

- 377 stroker engine
- forged crank
- forged rods
- forged flat tops and Dart Iron Eagle Cylinder Heads 72cc, 2.02 int, 1.60 ehx (a little lower comp.ratio, because of further plans to install Nitrous)
- comp cams XE 274 cam
- hooker competition headers
- edelbrock performer RPM AirGap

Now I've got to wait aprox. 5 weeks to get my stuff and then the party begins
When it's delivered I'll make some pictures and post them here...

I also think that I'll need some aditional help regarding assembly from you guys, so don't go away yet

Thanks, CU soon
