Post Cam choice...

Here's the combo:
-350 +.04, ~9.5:1 CR
-Q-jet carb (750cfm)
-Very ported Q-jet intake (will get a single-plane intake later)
-882 heads, ported (~170cc intake runners), 1.94/1.5, screw-in studs
-Summit cheapo headers (1 5/8")
-2.5" exhaust pipes w/ glasspacks, and probably cutouts
-TH350, 2500 stall, unknown rear gears, and short (24.6") rear tires (225/60-14")

I'd like the engine to be able to pull to 6000-6500rpm, have enough vacuum for power brakes, and (of course) as much power as practical!

What I'm looking at is the Comp Magnum 282 solid cam:
236*/236*@.05, 110*LSA (104*IC), .495/.495 lift.
Remember, this is a solid lifter cam, so it should behave like a slightly smaller hydraulic cam, right?
Engine analyser predicts 170# cranking pressure, and 13.8" of idle vacuum with this cam.

I've also considered getting a Howards or Schneider custom solid grind with 236/242@.05, thinking my exhaust might like the extra duration?

Could I/Should I run a larger cam with 9.5:1 & iron heads (never tuned an engine before - I don't want to have to worry much about detonation).
Loosing some low-end doesn't bother me - the suspension will be set up towards handling, and the cops here are very touchy about squealing tires, so I don't want to have to worry about hooking up loads of low-end torque!

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a nice little combo. I wouldn't bother using a bigger cam then the 282S with those tiny *** heads. I think you'll like that combo as it is. If anything I'd go to a performer RPM and a speed/mighty demon carb. With a good free flowing exhaust and decent port work on the heads, you could easily make 360-370hp.

Have fun.

well, I'm hoping the portwork I've done on the heads turns out well (crosses fingers). They are somewhere around 170+cc's, and a far cry from the soot-covered things I started with. We'll see...

On the cam, I was hoping it'd perform somewhere between an XE268 and a XE274, because I've always heard to subtract 5-10*@.05 when going from solid to hydrauilc due to the valve lash... As long as it pulls to near 6K with the current setup, I'll be happy.

That cam will easily pull to 6,000rpm. I had a 355 with sporstman 2 heads and a 228*@.050" duration .480" lift hydraulic that I shifted at 6,000.

I would go with a newer XE solid. The 282S is kind of old. See what the specs are on one of the custom grinds.

if I got a custom cam, I'd have it about 236/242@.05, 110LSA, and .52"/.52" lift w/ 1.6 rockers.
I figure .5" net lift (after lash) is about the limit of both the springs and the valve guide-retainer clearance...

I didn't think the XE solid cams were out yet? Have to check comps website...

I'm pretty sure the XE solids can be gotten. Don't think they are in the catalog, but you can get em.
