Brake Lights suddenly dont work...

First it was the right one. Now its both. The tail lamps both work but nothing when i hit the brakes. The bulbs both look fine or is could both be bad and i cant see it?

Would it be a fuse even though the tail lamps work?

Can you still see two separate filaments in each bulb?

So does the guy behind you.

I think there may be separate fuses for the brake and tail lights though. That might be easier to check with a flashlight.

Nope. I just checked my 67. Same 20A fuse for STOP and TAIL LAMP.

It's most likely the bulbs.

Tell me about it. I spent the day working on my kid's car while he was out hanging with his friends.

We have to learn to be selfish. My daughter wants a 1st gen Mustang. She thinks i'm going to deliver one to her perfectly w/ power windows - power door locks - nice new AC system. She's wrong.

OK - help me out here - replaced both bulbs - both tail lamps work - I wasnt able to see if either brake light works but the hazzards definitely dont work (neither lights up) - I know for a fact that one hazzard will flash if the other bulb is out. But now - neither hazzard flashes.

Now - I see that there was a loose ground wire coming from the right (passenger) side taillamp. It is attached to one of the screws on the bezel housing - it is white and has a blue collar on it but I cannot for the life of me figure out where it is suppose to go. There are two wires that come out of the taillamp bulb and there arent any open connections along that harness that runs along the back of the trunk.

Any ideas?

Have you tried replacing the flasher? I'm not sure if that impacts the brake lights but it might. I don't think the ground is the problem, otherwise the tail lamps wouldn't work either.

I'm trying to remember.... is there a switch on the brake pedal that activates the brake lamps? Maybe that's the next place to look if the flasher isn't the problem.

What exactly is the "Flasher" and where is it?

Its odd - sometimes the dash lef/right signals (when I put on the hazzards) flash slow - sometimes fast.

The its got to be the flasher. On the firewall, near fuse box, small spherical looking device about an inch across. (see pic) Sometimes referred to as flasher relay.

GM should be a 552 if I remember correctly.

AKA turn signal relay... plus I was just looking for pics online and came across a Chevy reference as a "Turn Signal / Stop Lamp" relay.

These damn cars - one thing after another and the symptoms are so inconsistent. Wait - that's all cars.

So - that's the problem you think? I guess its worth a shot.

I just checked the bulb socket on the right tail lamp (the one that went out initially) as the metal inside looks deformed. I dont know - maybe that's it as well.

Any chance the major auto parts stores carries these bulb sockets or am I about to spend some $$ from Classic Industries?
