86 iroc-z
86 iroc-z
I had an 88 iroc-z that I sold for 1,500. I bought my cousins 86 iroc-z, it is way nicer, every option for tht year camero, and I only paid 1800 for it. the body on it has next to no rust, only 3 small spots, one on the back fender well, on of the hood loovers, and one on the edge of the drivers side door, the paint is oxadized, and the under carriage is caked with cob webbs from sittin
it needs a tune up and what not, but other than that she is a dream. I drove her to work sunday, got off work at 5 a.m. cranked velvett revolver on the cd player, got home and she had over heated, 260 degrees
I knew right off the bat something was up with the fan. I got the fan to turn back on the next day, my day off. Drove it to my uncles, we went to go to the title shop and she over heated again, the fan stopped coming on again. I babied her to my friends place, less than 5 mi nutes from where we were.
I got a new fan relay, 2 sets of red and black 12 gauge wire, and one 20 amp toggle switch, just incase the fan relay didn't fix it. we popped the fan relay on and nothing, we went to put the toggle switch on the fan adn it popped the toggle switch, the guy at auto zone said a 20 amp toggle switch is over kill for the fan, but I tihnk he was an idiot. So what we did was run the hot wire for the fan to the top post of my battery, every time I wanna turn the fan on I just pop the hood and slip the connection on the top post
my question is why didn't the fan relay fix the fan problem? I w told it is either my thermostat, the heat sensor in the motor or something with the computer
the car is ok, we checked her out, I gotta clean the radiator fluid off the inside of her, and that's it other figuring out why tthe fan stopped turning itself on
any thoughts?
yikes just realized I posted in the wrong forum, sorry, been a long couple days, can a mod move this to right forum for me?

Re: 86 iroc-z
a friend of mine had a fan relay that wouldn't come on. Traced it to a bad ground connection - poor deisgn from the factory I believe. I think he ran the ground side of his relay straight to the engine block or chassis. Hope that works. You're on the right track by running your own 12v fan, but try to find one accessory not being used on the fuse block. It's just safer that way, and you won't blow fuses with your toggles switch.
