Probably get better result in the "Classic Engine Tech" forum..... not a lot of traffic there, but more than there is here. There is a thread about a 79 305 that is active on the Classic forum right now, which you are already posting in.

Moving.............

Go with the edelbrock performer kit and swap to a performer intake. You will gain back alot of torque u r missing and don't even know it. Get some headers for it and u will be so much happier

I would also go with a performer cam but pick the one for a 400ci and get a RPM intake.

Something like a compcam 252H (prt#12-205-2(49))And I would not use a single plane intake on a 305.It costs too much torque down low and you want all you can get.

Your '79 305 will respond well to a different set of cylinder heads as well. The combustion chamber needs to be kept small to retain some semblance of compression ratio, and the overall port volume should also be kept smallish, like no more than 180 cc. These $400 Vortech heads might do the job from Scoggin Dickey.

You will also want to hop up the torque converter to a TCI Saturday night special - but nothing too crazy. I dont know what gear ratio you are running, but you will find that snap improves by moving to a 3.42:1 ratio; 3.73's if you dont do a whole lot of highway driving.

Re: 79 camaro 5.0 305 cam suggestion

i have played with a few 305's i even did the recipe for a 400hp 305 builup once(wasnt very streetable with an auto , had to go stick).for a street driven car , a build up like i did for my son works well.we used the latemodel 58cc swirl port 305 heads to keep good compression and a 375 horse regrind gm cam it is like .442 lift and 222 duration@.050 lift.(i bought the cam from bucks engine parts a local supplier for like $40 its a melling regrind) the car makes almost 300hp , has alot of torque will smoke the tires whenever you want and is all in all real fun to drive and still uses 87 octane gas. i hope this helps.
