427 Rat?

Can someone tell me what a 427 "Rat" is? I guess it would be in the same class as the 426 hemi and 429 cobra jet.

Rat means big block chevy. A mouse is a small block chevy.

Wow that was quick. Thanks. For some reason I thought it would have something special to it.

I'm not really sure who started the rat/mouse terms but they stuck. No other automotive engines ever got those kind of nick names since they were never a manufacturer name for the engines unlike Olds Rocket, Ford Windsor/Cleveland/Modified etc. I suppose Poncho for the Pontiac engines is the closest.

Everyone seems to be trying to create a new name for engines. The rebirth of the Dodge hemi, The vortec, Powerstroke (IHC 444E and VT365 engines), Duramax, Quad 4, Aurora, etc. Just fancy manufacturers names for an engine design. Rat and mouse I think were given to the engines by the early hotrodders.

Some people call the Hemi (the real one) the "Elephant" motor.

Unhappy 500hp 350?

hi, i recently aquired a 1986 Iroc. the engine is an older 350 four bolt engine, im used to mopars and wanted to know any info on builing a chevy small block. im thinking about getting the holley system max two kit, then swaping the intake and cam for a hyd roller 240/248dur,and 558lift. then putting a victor intake on it. im going to be running close to 10:1 cr. is it possible to get close to the 500 hp and trq mark with this? its actually going to be a 377cui engine after i get the stroker kit. any tips please would be appreciated. iam i going in the right direction.
