350 build

I'm just got this 350 and I am looking for a good street/strip build but I am on kinda budget. It is a 1992 truck block with vortec heads what intake carb cam should i change out the bottem end? On average how much does machine work cost cause i would love to have a 383. Is 11 compression to high to run pump gas on? I want something around 500-600 horse power. Thanks

11:1 is a bit much for iron vortecs and 93 octane.

Ok, what does this vortec do? Why are they so different from normal heads?

I should have said iron heads. Vortecs are good cheap heads for a performance build. I believe that 11:1 is a bit much for iron heads though. You're gonna be right on the border of pump gas.

I'll go with 10.1 then thanks. Whats a good build for a street/strip torque engine? I'm talking like carb intake cam, things like that. Thanks

I am a big fan of the vortecs, in a 350 they can put down well over 400 hp with very basic parts. I would have them machined if possible, you want to make sure they can handle more lift. The max lift you should use with stock vortecs is .460". They benefit from a split duration camshaft because of the smaller exhaust port. They don't really gain much from being ported though.

Use a performer RPM manifold or something similar and a Holley carb, 650-750 cfm.

Many builds have been done using those parts and they always net around 400-420 hp around 5200 rpm. You can get more out of them, but you will need to invest some more money and do a lot more research. I'm quite new to this myself.
