327 power

What would be a good formula for getting some serious power out of a 327? I have one that was put in my 80 camaro before I bought it and I'm really interested in building it up but I'm kinda floundering on ideas.

There's nothing exotic or strange about a 327. Just go about a plan like you would a 350 and realize that most aftermarket part powerbands are listed for a 350 so that cam or intake will peak out 500-800 rpm higher, and the bottom end will be a bit softer. The 327 will make your heads seem a bit bigger as well.

Re: 327 power

The keys to hp are the heads, cam, valvetrain and intake. Before you start buying parts, you need to have a clear idea of what you want and a realistic budget. I have been playing with these things (Chevys) for years. When I started it used to be searching junkyards for suitable parts and now I am in the "buy the best (expensive) stuff" mode. So, I could probably help but need to have a better idea of what you are trying to do, how much work you can do yourself, and what your budget is.

Budget isn't a huge issue( I can't go too crazy but I can still afford some good parts),I really want it to be a mainly strip car that I can still drive on the street when my d/d is down.I've been tossing the idea of a turbo or supercharger on it. I can do any of the work except the machine work.

Re: 327 power

I ran a 327 for years in an strip only 69 camaro. As stated above good heads and flow are very important......but with a small cubic inch motor to make real good power you are going to need to build it for some rpm. I had Carillo aluminum rods, Ross lightweight pistons, Manley lightweight valves, titainium retainers, ect. that were lightweight and meant for high rpm usage. On motor only the car was running 10.80's. Had a turbo 400 with brake, 5000 stall, 5.14 gearing, shifting at 7800-8000rpm. It was a great car and lots of fun....ahhhh the memories
