yep.

even on high compression and everything else a SBC won't need bigger than 1 3/4". 2" is good for big blocks because they naturally make brutal low end tq. my 460 is a 1968 casting that came from factory with only 320 HP but rated about 500 lb-ft of tq from factory. these are common of many big blocks like Ford's 390, it had 290 HP but 430 lb-ft of tq from the factory. these engines can take the sacrifice of some low end to make HP at the top end, but a small block you plan on taking to 8500 rpm will make both tq and hp at higher ranges so you'll want to keep some backpressure to help maintain low end tq.

but with a t brake and a 5000 stall my low end won't be there anyway. except street driving every once in a while but i won't need the low end.

1 7/8" x 3 1/2" is plenty big for your 408.Have made over 1000HP with that size.
