Chevrolet divorced the Camaro in 2002. You shouldn't really count anniversaries after a divorce.

 

You were correct the first time. Camaro first arrived on showroom floors in September 1966 as a 1967 model. (Without looking it up I believe it was either the 10th or 11th.) So this is the 40th anniversary year of the original release of the Camaro.
