Wire nuts?

they are for household electric repair right?

I was installing my new radio in my car. I got the wire adapter harness and everything so I don't have to cut up my wiring. I spent about an hour to make western union splices in all the wires to make for maximum connection and cleanliness. I finish up and tie wrap the work and head out to the car. I remove the driver's kick pad, radio cover and radio... I unplug the harness and look for the power wires to disconnect the CD changer as I won't need it anymore... Apearently whoever installed it didn't bother to get an adapter, didn't bother to even use a slice tap... they cut those wires and used WIRE NUTS to attach the changer harness in why the heck are they in my car? WTF is wrong with people

I guess time to get the soldering iron back out...

So begs the question... who else has needed to repair "hack job" wiring in their car?

meh it was probably not an hour but I did spend enough time to make sure it was clean and wired right

I prefer soldering, but is that really something wrong with wire nuts in car audio aside from appearance (i see them there all the time)

I see them and poor crimp connections get pulled apart fairly frequently. I always solder and shring wrap the wires. It looks neater and it won't pull apart.

I like to solder and shrink wrap or electrical tape also. I've seen some rat nest installations before but I guess it took me by suprize cause I remember the guy I bought the car from telling me the CD changer was installed by a pro...

What blows my mind was there wasn't any tape on the wire nuts they where just twisted on and the antenna box also had the wrong connecter the wire was just sitting in the socket of the radio so I guess there is no way the changer was installed by a pro... either way Im taking it out. Maybe sell it or something? I convert all my music to MP3 anyway so I see no need to hook it back up.

What kind of shrink wrapping would you recommend? I love the idea, tried using different ones, but got pretty much mixed results Thanks!!!

Wire nuts.... O lord....heavy bass will rattle those loose rather easily.

Soldering is fun to do, but I don't have one so I just crimp + electrical tape.

a couple years down the road when you want to upgrade you'll pat yourself on the back for using heat shrink...otherwise you'll have sticky black fingers.

Good point. If you're gonna do it, do it right and forget all about using electrical tape.
