window motor or switch?
my passenger window sometimes will not go up or down. Then, if i wait a minute or two, it usually will. Do i need a new switch or a new motor? is there any sure way to tell? any ideas?

I'm 90% sure it's a motor. Mine will start to go up then stop. Wait a few seconds, then it will go up some more, then stop. The longer I wait the more it will move up. I think it's overheating. I have heard they have thermal relays on them..... anybody?
WEll I actually have an old motor, but they are a major pain to switch. They are riveted in.
See, I banged up the original door back in November, and had it replaced. But I saved the old motor. Heres why I thought maybe it is the switch not the motor: the old motor would go up real SLOOOWWW sometimes, like it was going to quit. The new one goes up and down fast. Just sometime it quits.
Does anyone know of some type of diagnostic test to tell?

i know that it is not the switch becasue i already replaced mine. i am just kinda telling you what i have already done. my mecahnic thought it was the switch too so we replaced that and it was still doing the exact same thing. and this aint some problem i had like two years ago i just replaced my switch on like thrusday of last week. and it didnt help. so upon an inspection of all wires and all those brackets in their to make sure that no jamming is going on or nothing is rubbing. we concluded that it could not be anything else but the motor because everything else was lubed and checked. just my two dimes and a nickel. hope my own little dignostic help you out with your problem and save you money.
this has happened to me (and about everyone else too, everyone gets their turn with these
) on my driver side. did the same stuff you said, it is most likely your motor. My mech. swapped switches and it did ****

The window motor has a thermal resistor in it and it heats up as you put the window up. If it stops and you wait a minute the resistor cools down a little and is able to raise the window a little bit further. I had the same thing happen to my 96 Z28. To replace the window motor just go to

There is step by step instructions there for replacing the windowmotor.
