Well I have mine mounted on top of the gas tank (with a board underneath of course) but I have tinted windows and a blanket over them (only when I'm parked). There really isn't any other place to place them. You could have it custom fit into the placstic molding in the rear and that way you could still use the holders for your t-tops. You're other solution is to take out your back seats and mount them there but you would have to cover it up somewhow so people walking by couldn't see them. I say use the blanket =)
Hey I just saw this page this is also a good idea if you don't want to mount the amps in the plastics

The only problem with this setup is that depending on your subs. You may not have enough air space and your subs will not sound nearly as good as they should. And also. the wood used in the box is very important. The only reason my momo's sound as good as they do is because it was a custom made maple box. If you mount your subs on the side like shown in the pictures I'm not sure what kind of sound quality you will get. If you ask the owner of that car he may tell you it sounds great but I am an amatuer recording engineer so over the years my ears have become a bit more tuned to pick up on different frequencie responses and the overall warmness of the sound. And as you can see from pictures of my car, the way the subs are directed they bounce the sound off the glass hatch and let me tell you! Those subs hit so hard it jolts me in my seat! But it still sound tight and crisp and responds well to the 30-85Hz range as well as the 100-120Hz range. But I give most of the credit to my box. Hope this helps.

If it will fit you can try mounting it on a board inside your spare tire.
