I have a $120 (2 years ago) Whistler thats great. My GF just got a $100 Cobra one thats got a compas, that ones been great too.

Remember though, its just a tool. Watching traffic and brake lights are your best defense.

Car and Driver did a comparo of detectors back in '02. Probably the most unbiased test out there as Radar Test and others are funded by the makers of the detectors.

buy a used one off Ebay. I picked up a Bel 870 for about $35. It works pretty good and has saved me many times. Used Valentine 1's still sell for over 300.

Escorts rule. I was going to get an 8500, but once I saw Escort came out with a new one, the cordless Solo S2, I got that one instead. All the greatness of the 8500 in a cordless version. It's saved my *** many a time.

Wink

Like already mentioned, Valentine One and Escort are pretty much the most highly regarded and have been at the top in many tests (the order depends on who paid for it, of course...).

Out of the four different detectors I've ever had, the V1 has definetely been the most effective and most accurate.

I could never justify myself paying 400 bucks for it, but since I got it at a good price from a friend, I decided to take it.

Then again, my previous Cobra, Bel and Uniden were accurate enough for me, too, so...

Actually a really good radar detector can be bought at wal-mart. The Traveller made by PNI is a very good unit. They hold several patents and aren't that expensive $129.
