upgrading speakers

hello. I'll let everyone know off the bat that I know just about nothing about speakers and an audio system. my first car didnt even have an FM radio or a working antenna so I was thrilled with a CD player in my firebird. My speakers are starting to crackle alot, and I think 2 of them dont work at all.
I want to replace them with better units but I have absolutely no idea what speakers will just fit right in or if I need to re-wire anything.
The speakers are all 6.5" correct?
also, do 1994s come with 10 speakers? I was told they were but I can only count 6 (door, next to rear seats, and in the hatch.)
could I put a new head unit in without re-wiring everything?

if I need to rewire, is it that hard?

I don't really know what to ask since I never tackled an audio project before heh.
I would love to just walk into the store with some part numbers and walk out with the parts needed to pop right in but I don't think its going to be that easy :/

I think this and this thread will answer just about every question you have. You have the monsoon system. Which is well known for being all around crappy. You can put a new headunit in without any odd modifications. Just your regular wiring harness, antenna adapter and dash kit. Stock openings are 6.5S(6.75") but most 6.5"s will fit without problems. How much are you looking to spend on a headunit? On new speakers?

sorry for responding so late to the thread, for a while here I didnt have a comp or connection...

So my car already has a sub of some sort next to the rear seats, and I can upgrade that to give me a little more bass?
after reading that site trying to understand it I'm now leaning towards buying an aftermarket head unit.

I would like to not spend over $750 for the whole deal.

I think GM only offered the Bose system in 94.....am I correct? The links I gave you are reffering to the monsoon system. I see two ways to run this. Rip out the entire stock system either way, but the options are:
A: Check out the second link a gave you. Throw those Rockford's next to the rear seats and a quality component set up front. Both powered by a single 4-channel amp and new headunit.
OR
B: Run fronts only. Run a quality component set up front and a single 10" in the back. Power the fronts off 2-channels from a 4-channel amp. Bridge the other channels for the sub. Replace headunit.

What are you looking for in a headunit? CD-R capability?

the adapters seem to be wrong, I couldnt get the speakers to hook up. I also couldnt get the head unit in because the wire things didnt go together. I tried the head unit installation first then tried a rear seat speaker. after they didnt match up I tried to put the factory speaker back in but dropped one of the clips down into the car. I'll never get that one back now. I started running out of daylight so I just stuck the cover back on and now im worse off than when I started. Im starting to get very frustrated
