Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Excuse me if this has been discussed before, but I have seen snipits of the situation, but not solution ??
2000 Camaro SS with stock Monsoon system. Replaced the head unit with Sony XAV - AX37000. Used wiring harness with radio and steering controls, no problems (including a backup camera) everything working great (awesome to have blue tooth, maps and car play) !.
Prior to the head unit, one of the door speakers was acting up, as it the other had done before replacing with another stock speaker that was available at the time. So, I decide to replace all the speakers with the compatible Kee Audio level 2 line. Did the hatch and moved forward. Replaced the sail panels with CDT 2ohm speakers, using a meta harness. They are super weak to the point of saying not working, I can only really feel bass when hand is on it (cone not moving and no sound). So I put the stock back in, same thing. So, I would not think both speakers are bad, maybe the stock has been blowen and I didnt notice ?
I am left with (in order of probability?) -
1. cutting off the stock adapter off of the stock speakers and using with the new speakers (but again the stock speakers are not working with the factory adapter) ?
2. It is the head unit itself not compatible with the stock monsoon system amp and wiring (shouldnt be the Kee / CDT speakers as they are direct replacements) ? Or I am missing a setting ?
2. It is the monsoon amp (but all the other speakers in the car work) ? I would think the monsoon powers all or nothing ?
3. The factory wiring does not work / has not worked for some reason ?
Any thoughts, experiences are appreciated !
Thanks.

Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
I see you’re a long time member, last posted about 6 years ago. Unfortunately, things have deteriorated even more. There are days that go by with no posts. There are maybe a half-dozen knowledgeable LT1 owners and one or two LS owner that show up from time to time. That’s all that’s left of the over 100,000 members.
So might take a while for a response. And I know nothing about the audio systems. I can give you a link to a free download of the 2000 factory service manual, courtesy of member GaryDoug:

Bummer - I though these F boy pony car talks would last forever.
Here is to someone that had the same issue and had resolution and I will do the same. Thanks !

Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Random thought of mine…. probably not well thought out.
My 94 had the 10-speaker system, but wasn’t called “Monsoon”. Anyway, it had a small amp for the sail panel “subs”. Amp was about the size of a pack of cigarettes, located in a small pocket inside, and part of the plastic sail panel, passenger side, near floor (as I test a memory from 25+ years ago). Does the 2000 have that amp? Could it be bad? Or not well matched to the speakers?

Yep, you are right. That is the monsoon system and does have it. Thats the thing that amp powers all the speakers rather than the head unit (or so I have read/been told). So it would be all of nothing if it was bad in that case. And the speakers being 'matched' yeah, they were single voice coils at 2Ohm so that is all cool.
But you are on the right track !!!!
Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Basic questions..
1. Have you confirmed the fader and balance on the new head unit are centered (sending equal power to front and rear)?
2. Did you double-check the wiring of the head unit to the stock harness (Usually a Metra GM adapter is used, unless you wired it directly to the stock harness by cutting off the end). Also, make sure you're hooking + and - to the correct terminals on the speakers. A lot of people mix this up, not that it would cause the issue you're having, but it sounds better when the speakers are all hooked up the same: (+ to +), and ( - to - )...
3. If you're sending signal to all speakers, it's possible the Monsoon amp is giving up. If memory serves me, it's just forward of the spare tire beneath the hatch trim, right rear side. Check connections.

1. Yeah, to it narrowed down to the back, where I just hear the hatch and some slight air/sound from the sail panels.
2. Thought about that two, but if matched GM factory code it should ! But I have been tempted to switch them ....
3. Yep that is where the amp is, never messed with it. All original harness intact. Again, I heard the entire system goes though the monsoon and other speakers work.
Thanks again all for the tips. If anything the new HU is well worth the upgrade without the full audio working at the moment.
Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Did you look at the wiring schematic in the 2000 factory service manual? What is the RPO code for your audio system? The manual shows the amplifier back near the antenna.
Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
I did not check the wiring schematic. I didnt change anything, the harness plugged right in, including the steering wheel controls so the manual was not referenced. Not sure ROP code. But yep the amp is back there ! looking right at it, havent touched it.
Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
The only thing back by the antenna was a small box that has a sticker motion, believe this to the shock theft sensor ? Tracing the wiring in the tube cannot find the amp yet.
Re: Sail panel speakers not working after new HU
Unbelievable. This was answered by GaryDoug, and by me in your post on Firebird Nation. But, maybe you didn’t bother to check back, or just ignored it like all the other 70+ posts in that thread.
