Replacing head unit in my 87' Iroc
Replacing head unit in my 87' Iroc
My sister bought me a brand new Alpine CDM-7854 for xmas, now how should I go about installing it? Does anyone have a diagram of how I should wire it and which go with which?
Since the head unit is bigger what should I use to "fill" the excess space left behind?
Any help would be appreciated, thx.

Buy a wiring harness and a mounting kit. The wiring harness is color coded to match the alpine harness, so you just crimp them together with butt-connectors, and plug it all into the factory wiring. You don't want to chop up the stock wiring. It's a pain in the ***, makes a mess, and really sucks when you need to replace that radio with a different one.
The mounting kit will take up all that extra space. It looks like hell because it sticks out a mile, but there's a flush-mount kit available, although I can't find it on the site where I purchased mine from. You can use the flush mount kit if you remove the metal bracket that holds the back of the stock radio.

90 minutes of my life later i finally did it
i really didn't help my cause at all, i bought a cheapass 15$ GM kit made for like, 100 different cars, so it came with a million different mounting brackerts and faceplates.
i also decided i couldn't wait and installed it at night, so im sitting in my car, with a flashlight, rooting through 3 boxes of wrenches (jesus, torque, metric, standard, USE ONE FOR GODS SAKE!)
finally i give up and assemble the kit in my kitchen, i used the 2" faceplate, so it sticks out 2" giving maximum room and looks clean, it was TIGHT, my god, had to position the wires perfectly to get them to fit (i hope i didn't crush/pinch any wires cause i just pushed it in and bolted that bastid in)
luckily my sister had the unit prewired by Tweeter, so i had no wiring to deal with, hooked everything up real quick, sucked that the power line was so short and everything else was so long, cause it made it harder to position the wires and my shifter was in the way.
it looks pretty good, almost perfect fit, i am sorta worried about the wiring because i forced it in there, everything works tho so oh well.

Holy ****, you used the big bump? I had an 87 in the otherday, the metal price was already removed I had a ton of room. Ive even seen a small amp behind the radio with it removed. Installs you see from 10+ years back are scary stuff.
