I searched long and hard and I found out that 1997 and 1998 Camaros can have factory Monsoon systems in them, and are only labeled "Delco Electronics." Apparently they started putting the Monsoon label on them in 99.

SO...I want to replace my front speakers. There are 4 wires going in to each, and I want to replace them with a nice pair of Polks that I had in my '94 Camaro. There are only two wires because they don't have tweeters in them like the Monsoon speakers. How should I wire them to work with the Polks?

I would start by pulling the factory speakers and checking to see what their impedance is. If the woofers are 2ohms then don't bother replacing them unless you plan to replace the amp too. If you replace a 2ohm woofer with a 4ohm woofer (the industry standard) you will only be getting half the power that the stock speaker was getting. For whatever reason GM chose to use 4ohm tweeters and 2 ohm woofers in the POS Monsoon system.

Baaah!!! I'm so tired of integrated systems that always have to be special cases. Goodbye to Packard Bell computers, and now to hell with Monsoon stereo systems

Anyone want two nearly new pair of Polk oversized 6.5's? (they fit perfectly in stock locations)...

Do you have the factory head unit? or an aftermarket unit? If you have an aftermarket you can put in those Polks and run new wiring to the aftermarked head unit. If you have the factory head unit you're probably going to run into the problem listed above.

i don't have the moonsoon system in mine, but i do have the 4 wires going to the front speakers. if i remember right 2 of the wires are high frequency and 2 are mid or low frequency. i installed infinity kappa 2 way speakers in the front by splicing the high frequency wires to the tweeter only and splicing the mid/low frequency wires to the woofer cone of the speaker ( you may have to do some wire cutting and soldiering, cause i did). it worked fine for me. i could be wrong on some parts of what i told you. i did the front speaker install 2 years ago. i hope i helped some.

You likely have the monsoon system. UL1 is the RPO...look on the door. Not until 99 did they start labeling that system as "Monsoon."

The stock system consists of 8 speakers. There are two in each front door...A midrange and a tweeter (hence the four wires). The tweeters are driven directly off the stereo, while the midranges come from a 200W amp located in the rear passenger wheel well.

There are two 6.5" "subs" in the panels near the back seat, and two 4" midranges in the rear hatch. Both of those sets are driven from the amp.

really? wow! where is the amp at? and is it still functioning w/ the after market pioneer player? i don't have the car w/ me right now so i'll check for the code when i get it back. thats really intresting though. i figured that they only came with the cdplayer models. honestly, i never saw the original receiver the car had. it was replaced w/ a pioneer when i bought it used.

The amp is located in the rear passenger wheel well. (It's actually tough to find). If you listen very carefully, you can sometimes hear it clicking on or off when you turn on/off your stereo.

Aftermarket stereos plug in just like they do with any other system, and the existing Monsoon amp works with aftermarket systems just like the factory head unit does.
