I'm gonna drop $300-$400 on a new radar detector. I'm still debating on whether to get a passport 8500 or a valentine one. I want to get the V1, but i'm not gonna suction cup it to the windshield or have it hanging there. I would most likely velcro it to the center of the dash. On their website it says it has to be on the windshield or the rear antenna won't work and it will be less sensitive and you'll get mixed signals. So here's the question... For those of you with the v1 where do you have it and do you think it will affect the radar that much if i put it on the center of the dash?

 

I have mine suctioned to the windshield just barely below the rear-view mirror. I would think that if you mount it on the dash you might not be able to pick up a rear hit because of the seats and body work.

Also, I ran my wire up into the headliner where the wire to the rear-view mirror's lights goes in and around the driver's side and have it hard-wired into a switched wire on that side of the dash.

 

Get the Passport 8500.

 

Definately!! I have it and it's the best one I have ever had in my life. I have it mounted right where the windsheild and dash meet right in the middle and it works great for the front and the back. You can barely see it with it mounted there too so it's not obvious to cops that you have a detactor. You'll see them before they see you anyway, trust me! Just get the Passport you'll love it.

PS. Go to e-bay and see if you can get one there. I got mine used on e-bay for $250 and it's in perfect condition!

B*** S***!!!!!! PASS on the passport!!! sure it's cheaper initially, but haven't you heard you "get what you pay for" I have a V-1 and have had it for several years now and it has ALWAYS performed flawlessly. I mount mine over the top of my mirror and ran the wiring along the headliner and down the windshield pillar, so you can't see any wiring. Call up Cincinnati Microwave and see if you can "upgrade" your Passport when the next new version comes out. Valentine upgraded mine after they made several new changes and gave me a new warranty. They will NEVER do that if you buy a Passport. Will the Passport show you whether your radar/laser hit is coming from the front or rear??? .... I don't thinks so.... it just beeps. Does it tell you just HOW MANY sources of radar/laser it is receiving???? NO it just beeps. I use mine on my bike too and it has saved my butt MANY MANY times and paid for itself over and over in tickets, court costs, and insurance premiums. I had a couple of the earlier versions of the Passport before buying the V-1 and in comparison the Passport is CHEAP. JMHO

 

Ahhh my post got moved out of the lounge, never been in this section... Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. In the long-run it will be cheaper to get the V1 since you don't have to buy a whole new detector when a new comes out... plus they have that nifty feature that shows where the radar is coming from, with that said I'm still not totally convinced about the passport. I don't want to wire it though I just want to put it on the dash and take it down and put it in my glove box cause it WILL get stolen here. So has anyone tried there V1 not on the windshield, is it still pretty sensitive? I know I asked this already, but I want to be sure before I spend $400... All my friends are like "A radar detector is a radar detector just go by a $60 one"

 

Hey come down buddy and do a little bit of research. Your are absolutely WRONG about everything you just said!!!

YES the passport DOES tell you if your being hit by a laser from any direction. Why do oyu have to know which direction it's coming from anyway, once your hit your hit DUH!!

NO the passport is not cheaper, I just got it heaper cause I got it used on ebay....haven't you heard of "OPEN YOUR EYES"?!!

YES you can get upgrades for the passport it even says it in the manual!! It's totally upgradable!

YES it does tell you what types of radar/lasar are hitting you at the same time AND the strengths for each one of them. It doesn't just beep.

Aparrantly you DO NOT know anything about what you are trying to say so don't bother trying.

I've also had my passport 8500 for about two years and it IS "the best detector in the world". Do some research and you'll know that that is a qoute. I've been saved numurous times by it and wouldn't trust anything else.

PS. You cannot compare earlier old versions of anything and compare it to what is out there now so why even bring that up??Technology does move very fast buddy.

 

Tell me how knowing where the radar is coming from is usefull To me it doesn't matter, if I know there is a cop around.....I slow down, I don't try to look at him!! Also like I said, mine works great on the dash. And by no means is a radar detector just a radar detector, don't get just any one. Don your research and you'll see that in most tests the passport outperforms the V1.

 

Im going to go with the 8500 when the time comes. JMO.

I have my current one much like a few of these guys do. Its mounted high on the windshield, with the wire run, under the headliner down the pillar, to the ignition harness. It turns on an off with the key, so I never for get. You cant see it where I have it, I leave it in over night, where ever I park. Its not noticible, and a cop cant see it when theyre standing at the window, Im sure they would see the thing sitting on the dash or suctioned to the window...
