newbie in sound department

hey guys, i have an 86 camaro (power hatch) and was wanting to FINALLY put some tunes in my car. i have a decent deck (its about a year old, its a 40x4?? maybe 40x2 watts. i forget. but the speaks in the car are shot. im just wondering whats a good setup to get... i dont want the BEST system out there.. but i dont want crap. id like to get 2 12 (in a box in the trunk.. so it hides the bottle ) 2 6x9s for the sides, some of those small ones (5 1/2 ) for the front. and maybe some tweets and 6" ones for the kick panels. oh.. and a amp. can someone point me in the right direction.. im totally lost in this department.

System on a budget huh? Don't worry everyone has a budget to deal with. How many preamp outputs does your Head Unit have? What brand and model is it? What kinda budget are you looking at here? $500-$750? $750-1000? More?

The easiest way to go is to as far as full range speakers, is direct replacement. 4x6 in the front and 6x9 in the back, but I wouldn't do that if you want GOOD sound. They just don't make good 4x6's that have a shallow enough mounting depth to put them in our cars.

As far as what will sound the best for the least money. I would say a single 4 ch. amp, rear bridged to a sub or two and front running a set of components in some fiberglass kick panels. I am going to run a similar setup here in the near future, you don't need rear speakers. In fact almost no one runs them in Sound Quality competitions. Oh and the shameless plug, check out my box below.
