Need some more UMPH!

I've got a 3rd gen TA, and I am looking for some more sound out of the old bird. I don't want to go as far as putting subs in it, but what kinda of alternatives do i have. I believe my car had the factory sub package, because the previous owner has constructed his own boxes(wooden) in the sail pannels of my car for 6x9's. I have an aftermarket pair of rear speakers, but I think they are Jensens. What kind of combination do i need to have a good sounding stero in my old car. What are the best speakers, front and back, for the buck.

If you don't want to add a subwoofer, just go with a nice component set up front and some rear midbass speakers. Powered off a 4-channel amp. Best bang for the buck? Probably the Infinity Reference components and the Kicker RMB6's for the rear. Powering them with the JBL P80.4 if your strapped for cash. If you can step it up, try the Kicker KX600.4 or even the KX800.4 You know, you could probably add a decent subwoofer/amp for a couple hundred more.....but your choice.

Normally I would aggree with firebirdude but not in this case. I do NOT recommend the Infinity Reference series components. I had them and got rid of them. I had mine high passed at 80Hz @ 18dB/octave and they still distorted badly on loud midbass. Since you'll be running them full-range the distortion problem will be even worse. I like the Infinity tweets but their midwoofers suck.

The tweets are indeed the best part of the system, and the woofers DO lack in the midbass region, but I pumped just over 100WRMS into them and they never distort. Even at VERY high volumes.....IMO they can't be beat for $89/new.

what kinda of money would I be looking at to upgrade all 4 of my speakers, and about the "box" that someone tried to build in my rear speakers wells, what can be done about those. They seem to be pretty sturdy, but I doubt they promote good sound.

You could get an amp. That will give you some more power. I have a Pyramid 400 Watt Amp for sale brand new in the box still under factory warranty for sale if you want it.
