Looking for system advice
Looking for system advice
Alrighty...First, I apologize for the length of this.
I've been out of the car A/V scene for WAY too long...my last system, consisted of the following:
Pioneer AVIC-N1 head unit
(2) Audiobahn AW1205Q 12"s in a custom box
Audiobahn front and rear components (I can't remember the model)
Visonik 4-channel Amp for those, and an Audiobahn A180011DT amp for the subs. Looked decent, sounded decent enough for what I put into it.
Fast forward:
With my "new" 93 Z-28, it's time to start putting together another system. Here's what I'm after...
I like my music loud, but CLEAN. I don't mind a nice thump and boom when the song calls for it, but I also like my mids and highs crisp. The kind that makes you flinch when the snare hits hard. That said, I'm also looking to keep most of my trunk well useable. I'm thinking about using the "stealth" idea, but maybe pushing it out a little farther, for a little more volume inside (if the sub calls for it). I'll build the enclosure, that's not an issue. Let's say we'll count on a 1 cubic foot requirement for the sub. I was thinking dual 12"s but that might get scaled to 1 for now.
Onto the rest:
I've always been partial to Pioneer decks. But, I would also like to incorporate Navigation into the picture. From what I see, I've got very limited choices, if I don't want to mold for a double DIN in the dash bezel. I was thinking an in-dash fold-out screen with a Nav addon module, but I only see I think one model of Pioneer that does that (new) and to be honest, I don't know much of them. My problem, is that there are NO good car audio/video review sites online. Everything is outdated on them now. So, if I decide to go away from Pioneer for the HU, I have no idea what the reviews are, other than epinions, etc. And when it comes to car audio, reviews like "OMFG THIS THING HITS MAD HARD YO, 5 STARS FER SHO!" just don't help.
SOOOOO....I'm appealing to the CZ28 masses, for advice on system component options, front to back, so I can narrow my options.
According to Cliff:
- Looking for a decent in-dash, fold-out DVD/Nav system. No low-end stuff please. Primary duty - CD playback, movie playback when stationary, and Navigation.
- Looking for decent front/rear speaker set-ups. They will be amp'd for whatever they require. They need to have decent sound quality (I'm not going for Studio quality, but I want something that covers the entire range (above subs) pretty decently. Also, something reliable.
- Also looking for a good suggestion for a 12" sub, 1 cubic foot approx requirement, that will be mounted in the hatch in a custom enclosure.
- Amp suggestions. A 4-channel that will handle the F/R subs (possibly a 5th channel for Center speaker duty if I go that far into the Video aspect. Not that important, however). And a decent sub amp, that will mate well with the above-mentioned sub, putting it at the ideal matching for it. You know, not a 150w RMS amp for a sub that will handle 750w RMS. Again, reputable.
And last...I'd like to keep to as few manufacturers as possible, just because that's how I am. However, I'm guessing probably 4? 1 for the HU, 1 for the F/R speakers, 1 for amps, and 1 for the sub. That's the least of my worries, however, I would like the amps to be of the same MFR, as they will be prominently displayed on the rear shelf.
OR. If all else fails, if someone could please direct me to a site or something, with up-to-date reviews on any or all of the above options, that would be awesome too.
I'm not looking to hit 5k RMS watts, or spend 25k on gear. I would like a decent setup, enough thump to make it count when I want, and ideally, all under a $2k budget, though the cheaper, the better lol. Assuming not skimping on quality. All installation will be done myself, so that's not an issue. I'm also not counting price of wire, fuses, or misc. stuff in that.
Thanks in advance for a) reading this far, and b) any help offered! It's much appreciated!
