i don't know anything audio, please help

i recently took out my side panels near the backseats and realized i have no speakers on either side. i don't know if it's supposed to be like that, but that doesn't really matter now. i was wondering what i could put in there. i don't want anything huge, i listen to rock and don't really need a lot of bump. i was looking for something cheap. also, i only have one speaker in the back, but that's probably all i'm supposed to have since i only have one speaker grill back there. i would like to change that. would i have to get component subs with the amps and a new panel with a grill to do that?

last, i am installing a new head unit. any help will be great. it's an old friend's jvc kameleon. all of this is on a 94 z. thanks for any help you can give me.

First off, here's a link that will no doubt answer some questions. Next, how do you not have rear speakers next to the back seats? Guess whoever you bought it from took them. And you only have 1 speaker in the far rear? Under the hatch? And even more puzzling, you only have 1 grill? Your far rear speaker grills should look like this. No. No. Not the subwoofers. Those oval shaped grills to the left and right of the amps. You only have 1?!?! If so, I bet the previous owner ruined or lost one and replaced it with one without the grill, like this one. Well well well..... where to start. Until you get some money together, I would just replace the front door and rear seat speakers with aftermarket equipment. Power them using your new JVC head unit. I'd disconnect that far rear hatch speaker altogether. Once you get some dough, buy a 4-channel amp to power your speakers. Lemme know what you think...

so do you think i should get two speakers for the middle sides and disconnect the rear one all together? or get 4 speakers and install 2 in the middle and 2 in the back? also, i heard running amps to speakers are not good for them. in the picture you had with no speaker in the back was there no speaker on both sides? i might just get a new panel with no grill for my driver side too and take out the rear speaker.
oh and installdr has anything on 94's but i would guess that 94's would be the same as others, but i don't know.

In the picture I linked to, there were no grills on either side. Just like in my car. I think replacing the driver's side with one without a grill is a great idea. Then buy 4 new speakers for your front door and rear seat area. And who in the he!! told you that amping your speakers was bad for them? Were they talking about the stock speakers? Because running an aftermarket amp to the stock speakers would probably tear them apart. They are a POS. How about a nice component for the front doors and a pair of midbasses for the sail panels? (rear seat) A quality component set can be had for as little as $90 brand new off Ebay, but they only get better with price. The sky's the limit. Get the best set you can afford. So you figure a couple hundred for all four speakers, then run them off the JVC headunit for now. Then when you get enough cash together, put an amp on em'.

I would recommend the Infinity Reference component set for your front doors. I had this set for several years, outstanding set for the money. For the rear, I recommend the Kicker RMB6 midbasses. Also, great for the money. As far as running new wires, that depends. Did you have the stock monsoon system? Do you have the door panels that have the mount for the tweeter? (you would know if you did)

A component system has some advantages that are critical to a good soundstage. The advantage of being able to place your tweeter seperate from the stock woofer location is crucial. Also, a component system includes a passive crossover. This keeps low frequencies from going to the tweeters and high frequencies from going to the woofer (mid). This will cut down on distortion and lengthen the life of your speakers. Now, if you can do all this for nearly the same price of a pair of co-axils.......what is there to think about? But it's your decision. For the rears, DO NOT put in 2-ways, 3-ways, components or anything else with a built in tweeter. The tweeter's high frequencies will destroy your soundstage. That's why I recommended a midbass/range.
