help with a new system
help with a new system
ok, ive tried fishing my way through the threads on here, and i kinda know a little bit, but i still need help and i figured it would be easier to just ask. So im wanting to get a good sounding system, and i currently have a 97 camaro with the monsoon system that is starting to get worse and worse. I want some good sounding speakers, and i was wanting to get 2 of the subthump enclosures with 2 kicker L5 solo-barics. Since i have the monsoon with the amp, i think... if understand corectly, i will have to rewire the car, right? If so can someone point me in the direction of a write up or something. When i get a new head unit and rewire or whatever, will i be able to keep my 12 disc changer, i really enjoy having it and if it is at all possibe i would like to keep it. Also i need help choosing a good amp, head unit, and speakers, for a decent price. Im just a high school kid so i dont have tremendous amounts of money, but im not exactly sure what i want to spend on this either. I know that that is a big question that gets asked when someone askes for a setup but im just not quite sure what i want to spend yet, so maybe you could show me several different options for different prices, or something. I dont know hardly anything about electronics, so i just need someone to guide me through all of this, or just help out. Anything is appreciated.
Thanks,
Lane

Re: help with a new system
With Monsoon you won't need to rewire anything. Just a couple of RCA's and power wires.
Check out pinout of an amp here:
http://www.houston-f-body.org/tech/monsoon/
Monsoon front outputs wires can be used to power midranges in front doors, monsoon front inputs wires can be used to power tweeters in doors (these wires should be disconnected from HU of course). At the back of your car you have all necessary wires to connect new speakers to amp(s).
You asked for recommendation of speakers/amps, so here is mine personal opinions:
Amps (unexpensive):
Recommended - JL Audio 300/4 + 500/1
On budget - look for MTX/RF stuff on e-bay, can be found pretty cheap
Hifonics amps are a good bang for a buck
Kicker's are some good amps too
Speakers :
Components in front: Eclipse, Boston Acoustics, MB Quart, Alpine Type-R; ebay too. Eclipse's in one of my cars outperforms just about everything I heard.
Rears: whatever, currently I have Bostons coaxials and they perform great
Headunit:
Pioneer Premier (you want high-voltage outputs); Eclipse (not a cheap ones, with high-level outputs + memory stick reader) - it sounds divine.

Re: help with a new system
ok, first thanks valter, you helped quite a bit, at least now i feel like i have direction. Ive been looking around, and ive kinda picked outs some things, so tell me what you think about this list.
2 subthump stealth boxes
with 2 kicker L7 Solo-barics subs
Eclipse CD5000 head unit
JL Audio 300/4 amp
(if im correct you said 2 different amps right?)
if so... JL Audio 500/1 amp
eclipse SP8964 component speakers
and im looking for speakers for the back seat spots, all i could see were 2 way speakers, and those cant be used in those spots correct? I have no clue, this stuff is confusing, so i guess i need a little more help.
but does that look good? I looked on ebay for all the prices on things, looking at used stuff, or wahtever, and i came up with a rough estimate. Im definatly gonna have to buy things an item at a time or something, cause it looks like all that stuff is going to be around 1300 dollars. Is that expensive, or reasonable for stereo stuff? Do i have a good list, and will it sound good? Any more help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lane
also...
i dont understand much of what you are saying there, maybe because im so tired or something, but if you can try to explain this in maybe more lamens terms than it already is, and im not really understanding the whole pinout of the amp thing. Im sorry but i am a complete electronics (stereo in particular) noob

Eclipse SP8964 is not really a components, I was talking about, never heard them/of them. For front doors - something like SC8264, with big crossovers, check out:
http://www.eclipse-web.com/speaker/index.html#spe
For rear sail panel you can put any 6.5" coaxials, 2-way speakers will work great.
Tweeter will need some creativity to mount, but it can be put in a stock spot.
JL 300/4 - for powering up 4 speakers, 500/1 - subs
You can save some by selecting a little cheaper hedunit and getting amps used from e-bay (no as-is though). Amps can be replaced with cheaper ones, but in my opinion, JL is the best value
Boston Acoustics components are more available and can be found a little cheaper, Alpine Type-R components will sound good too for less.
This system, being properly installed, will sound great.

Re: help with a new system
the setup you have listed sounds pretty decent. i'm a kicker and rockord fosgate person. this is what i have in my camaro:
2 kicker comp vrs ($120 each)
300/2 RMS watts from my Rockford P5002 amp ($400 but got it for $250)
3 farad capicitor (got it free from a friend)
4 guage kicker wiring to sub amp ($40)
4 new kicker 6.75 speakers off ebay ($150 for all 4) good deal
alpine head unit ($200)
forgot what my 4 channel amp was but i puts out 50/4 RMS watts
8 guage wire to speaker amp
now everyone has there own personal opinion about sound but i LOVE this setup. it rocks and doesn't distort. i also installed all of it myself. i did this all during junior and senior year in high school too. i'm a freshman in college now. but as a high school student, i had to decide on what i wanted first and go from there due to small amount of money. i would go with the headunit, speakers, and 4 channel amp. this will be a good temporary thing and if you get good speakers, you can turn up the bass and they sound pretty decent. since its also getting close to xmas time, you might be able to convince your parents to buy you the subs and bigger amp. just an idea. hope this was helpfull. oh and dont ever let best buy or circuit city touch your car to install anything!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_crossover
Commonly, it's a passive filter with one input from amp and two outputs - for big speaker (midrange) and little (tweeter). 4 of these speakers + 2 crossovers are sold together as "component" set. Components generally produces better sound quality and are capable of producing more power due to the fact, that frequencies, which speaker cannot reproduce are filtered out and will not be converted just to damaging heat in coil. Crossovers can be mounted anywhere, personally I like them to see together with amps. They can be sensitive to vibration.
Alpine/RF/Kicker makes some great stuff for sure.
