Head unit help/recommendations

Ok, I know absolutely nothing about audio, but the stock cd player gave up the ghost for the second time. I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations on a good head to replace this one, as well as, what else I would need, if anything, to swap it out. I know I would like the new one to have the following features: hd radio tuner; ipod capable, mp3/wma. I dont need a touch screen or anything like that. Any help would be great, thanks! Oh all the speakers in the car are aftermarket if that makes a difference, and the vehicle is a 99 trans am with that monsoon bull****.

I'm not much help, but IF you're gonna rely on your iPod a lot, like I do, then get a head unit that lets you scroll thru your artists FAST... The POS I've got Pioneer 4800??? w/ the iPod adapter is SLOOOOOW... I never listen to any artists past D now... AC/DC and ZZ Top get lots of play time tho... (fitting for an "old" muscle car anyway I guess :-))

I hear that the newer Alpines scroll the iPod fast... ???

Not sure if you can "see" the difference at your local Best Buy or not... I know they've got head units "hooked" to various amps and speakers, but don't think the iPod "adapter" is typically hooked up.

I'm running the Pioneer 4800 ?? head unit and some basic 6 1/2 ??? speakers. Sounds better than the OEM Bose system, but would be better w/ an Amp and better speakers.

No clue what the 2 ohm vs 4 ohm discussion is all about when it comes to Amps tho??? Maybe someone could shed some light.

later

Why not e-mail Crutchfield and ask them? They're happy to help.

I put a Pioneer AVIC-F700BT in my '00 SS. Paid $450 two months ago. I have the monsoon "amp" too, and the head unit works with it just fine.

Ups: ipod connectivity, SD card, bluetooth handsfree built in, navi works fine, works with PAC audio steering wheel controller

Downs: Long boot times (30-40s), limited navi function set (a garmin does more), doesn't fit without modification of the bezel, ipod cable costs extra, hd radio tuner is extra

It's no top of the line unit but for me its well worth the money.

I made a Camaro SS boot screen so the boot time doesnt bother me too much

How much are you looking to spend????

I'm pickin this up in a couple of weeks:

http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=CDA-9887

They said it was Alpine's best sounding headunit.
Has HD radio, ipod capable (have to buy the adapter seperate I think),
I'm pretty sure it plays mp3s. You can buy the imprint software too to customize the sound. All you do is take the mic and set it in the different locations of the car and it automatically tunes the settings.

One of my favorite features is that your can change the color of all of the buttons to green on blue, blue on blue, red on orange or red on red.

It's complicated but it's not.

An ohm is the resistance of electricity to flow if I remeber correctly. Amps tend to put out more power at a lower ohm rating because there's lest resistance-makes sense right???? So you match up a speaker's ohms with an amp's ohms. If installing subs and what not you can wire things crazy to go from 1/2 of an ohm to 8 ohms. It's very helpful cuz you can get different power outputs from the amp to match up subs. It's not so easily done with speakers cuz ther's a channel for every speaker that put out different sounds where as the subs put out the same sound.

If I misspelled thing or puntucated wrong sorry guys i'm tored i've been up for 19 hours.

LOL I was tored last night not tired.

You could also get it here too. It's 25 bucks more but comes with a one year warrenty.

You could buy an extended warrenty if you wanted too but I doubt you'll need it with Alpine but it never hurts to spend the extra bucks for peace of mind.

This is the best looking CD player in my opinion for all GM vehicles. Its a 1.5 din so you dont need an ugly adapter to make it fit. The problem is they are discontinued and are hard to come by.
