Has anyone pierced their gas tank?

How far does a screw have to go to peice the gas tank? Can you do it, and not know??

This picture should give you a decent idea of how much clearance there is: http://members.shaw.ca/nrfarley/pics...h/Image008.jpg

Im pretty sure you would hear/smell it if you pierced it. Kid at work hit one about 2 weeks ago, it lost all pressure and then you could definatly smell it...

Hey thats pretty nice, they should have made a removeable cover from the factory. I've yet to change my fuel pump, but it looks lioke cuting the hole is easier than taking out the whole damn tank! I might have to do this someday

I dropped the tank the first time and decided the second time that I should just cut an access hatch.

Dropping the tank isn't too bad of a job though, just a PITA.

after posting I looked into my haynes manual to see how difficult it is to remove the gas tank, and it says you need to remove the rear end to take it out, that alone is enough to persaude me to cut a hole instead. I'm not sure if its true, and removing the rear isn't hard, but who wants to spend hours instead of minutes! I say cut a hole, just go buy a dremel, or some other type cutting wheel and be done with it.

You don't have to completely remove the rear. Just unbolt some of the rear suspension and lower it. The biggest pain in the *** is remove the rear exhuast section if it's rusted.

I think x7x7"s pic says it best. One other way to measure is to pull out one of the t-top holder(bag) screws that are used to clamp the hooks on the bag in place. It's right behind your rear seat back rest. I recently recovered that carpet in vinyl and noticed that the screws not only go through the carpet but through the metal as well. Roughly on the top you have about an inch to work with and on the side (where it starts to slant down to the bottom of the floor) you may have 3/4 of an inch. I would'nt go any deeper than that. Too much trouble for some 10 cent screws.

If ya still cant get the measurement, I'll go around the block to my buddies house. he has an 86 RS thats already cut (fuel pump problems) and get the depth real quick.
