Got a "Monsoon" question > Please help
I have an 98 TA (500W
Monsoon system)
For the time being, I am just replacing the Monsoon HU with a Pioneer DEH-P5500MP 4 channel radio/CD/MP3 reciever. Leaving the rest of the Monsoon system stock.
I understand that the stock Monsoon HU powers all 4 tweeters, and the Monsoon amp powers all the rest of the speakers.
1. Since I am just changing out the factory HU, I am wondering if the sound quality will be any better since the new Pioneer HU will still only be powering the factory tweeters, and the stock Monsoon amp will still power the rest of them as before?
2. One other question: I see that in the 98 Pontiac TA Monsoon system, the two stock 4.0" Midrange speakers in the rear hatch area are 4 ohm.
Would it be worthwhile to change these with a better quality 4.0" / 4 ohm speaker at the same time that I am changing to the Pioneer HU?
(remember, these rear hatch 4.0" speakers will still be powered by the factory amp)
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Many have reported that just changing the HU out improves the sound of the stock Monsoon system. I personally kept the stock HU and changer and then changed everything else using the PAC OEM-1. You can check my system out at the link in my sig.
I personally wouldn't bother chaning the rear 4" speakers. I actually went to a set of MB Quart components for my back hatch and didn't notice much of an improvement at all, so I sold them. You're better off waiting and spending the money when you replace the front speakers.

Thanks for the info....
I posted this question over at LS1.Com too. Maybe you can give me a little insight:
_________________________________________
In the FAQ section at LS1.Com, it gives the following location of the various speakers for the 98 Pont TA / Monsoon system:
Door Panel Speakers:
6.5 inch / 2 ohm “S” Oversized
0.6 inch / 4 ohm Tweeter
Sail Panel Speakers:
6.5 inch / 4 ohm Dual Coil Woofer
Rear Hatch Speakers:
4.0 inch / 4 ohm Midrange
0.6 inch / 4 ohm Tweeter
__________________________________________
I see we have Tweeters, Dual coil woofers, Midrange, and "S" Oversize
That the heck is an "S" Oversize? (located in the door panels)
BTW, 0.6" seems awfully small for even a tweeter....
Thanks,
Ron

Tweeter size all depends on the range it is supposed to reproduce faithfully. Something that small is very limited as to what it can produce, but I don't think GM really cares about sound. They just want your money.
