Front door rattle, Polks?
Front door rattle, Polks?
Have developed an annoying rattle in the front left speaker with the stock Monsoon system. I really have no complaints with the stock system (to the horror to some here), but I'm guessing I've blown a factory speaker. Time for another upgrade....
Looked at Crutchfield and it looks like the Polk Audio db650's (looks like 6 3/4will work to replace the fronts). I intnend to replace the 4 (2 door at 6 3/4 and 2 backs at 6 1/2 in a ragtop unless I'm mistaken) to ensure balance within the system, but wondering if anyone has used them.
I have had good results in the past with Polks (home systems) but my personal preference is Klipsch (again, home systems) , but I am unfamiliar with these Polk units for auto applications. I am NOT looking for booming bass, rather I prefer tight clean bass and I do not forsee the need for a seperate sub woofer system based on space limitations. I am looking for a balanced warm sound that compliments the Monsoon system. I listen to a lot of classic rock and instrumental artists to put it into perspective. LOUD is not the goal, clean tight sound (ie bass) is. I'm trying to find a good replacement that is balanced/warm with the tone control set to flat-line, then CW or rock for more bass/top end punch as desired.
Any thoughts? Again, I don not intend to replace the head unit or re-invent the system from the ground up- just compliment the Monsoon system well.
Thanks in advance!
Allen

Re: Front door rattle, Polks?
Ok I am not a monsoon pro I usually rip it out and replace everything. I have done many installs with those exact polk speakers and I absolutely love them they are very warm and clean sounding. As for replacing the fronts with them someone will have to chime in because if I recall the monsoon system has some weird impedances which makes it hard to do, as well I believe the rear seat speakers are just bass so putting a coaxial in there is kind of stupid IMO.
Hopefully someone who knows monsoon better will chime in for u

I have the polk db's in my car. They sound really really good. Your right they dont put out a ton of thump but for your music they will do well. I would just amp them up. Mine is the componet system.

Thinking it might be more cost effective and easier install to do the plain db650s.
Thanks!

Re: Front door rattle, Polks?
If you get the set you only need 2 sets. You get two woofers and two tweeters in each box. YOu also get a cross-over and surface and inlay mounts for the tweeters. SO you will only need to sets. And if i am correct polk is still running the buy one get the second set half off. That means you can get a all the way aorund componet set for under 350. Yes mounting the tweeters is a topic of debate. I did the in lay mounts in both the front and rear with little overall effort. All you need is a hole saw and some steady hands. I would duggest buying a decent 40 to 50 watts x 4 ways to run them if you want them to have ther full potential.

I'm having the same problem right now with the front left. It happened out of nowhere. The funny thing is, sometimes it rattles and sounds blown, and other times it sounds perfectly fine. I know that there is a very thin black paper like thing behind the grill so that you cant see thru to the speaker. Any chance that this may have come loose and is hitting the speaker causing it to make the odd sound? I remember in my old car one time, a piece of paper was ontop of my rear speaker, and it made a similar noise. The speaker pulled the paper down like a vacuum.
Guess the best bet is to take the door panel off and check it out for myself
