Final Pics Of My System Installed.
That's exactly what I wanted to do, was run 6.5 subs instead of going big... But then I had to sell my car
Anyway, glad to hear someone did it and is happy with the results. I'll be getting another 94-96 Z in the very near future and should be able to follow through on my plans this time

Seats are Recaro Style. I bought them from abtivan.com and the cost was $2000 for the pair including delivery and all mounting brackets.
The steering wheel is a Momo that I picked up locally for $225. It's one of the best things I've ever done to my car. I can't begin to say how much fun a light, fast, grippy, small diameter steering wheel is. I really like this steering wheel a lot.

Very cool pics, also very nice website...I loved looking at and reading about your cars. Got any more pics of the fiberglass box you made for the side subs? I'm thinking about upgrading my radio from the monsoon to something like you have and would like those subs to sound good. I used to have 2 - 12's in my old car and it sounded awesome, not that the monsoon sounds bad now or anything
Also do you know of any radio head units that support the steering wheel volume and seek , play, mute, etc? I didn't realize how much I used them until lately.
Thanks

Sorry Spiderman, the OEM seats were sold before they even came out of the car.
UNFNick2, that's the only photo I have of the enclosure. They just took the material and pushed it in the hole to make a cavity. Then fiberglassed it. Isn't very pretty but it works great. The enclosure is as hard as a rock and my bass sounds great. It seems to go pretty low. To date not a single person has heard it that wasn't amazed to hear my subs were less than seven inches. You would be stunned to listen to such little subs make so much power and go this low. I was blown away and expected them to sound about half as good as they do. JL certainly knows what they're doing.
I don't know about using steering wheel controls with aftermarket radios though. I changed my steering wheel too so that played no bearing on my decision. I know that I've seen adapters out there though and I know people have aftermarket head units who have retained the steering wheel controls so anything is possible.

I believe that certain maufacturers make adapters for the use of the stock steering wheel. You would need to check on that.
1COOLPC. I do have a question though, where did you get those subs from, how big is the enclosure, and about how much did that part cost you in labor. I would love to do the setup you have there.
I only have 4 speakers, so I was thinking of putting 2 6x9 boxes on the rear ledgebehind the subs. Does anyone know if this would sound good? The deck I have is the alpine CDA-7893, and I will be getting Alpin Type R's for the fronts, and the 6x9s... I'm not too familiar with car audio, so I am wondering if this setup would work. Thanx

I bought the subs locally. Your JL dealer can get them for you. I paid $70 each, I was quoted $65 each but on the invoice I later saw they charged me $5 more for each one. One of these days I may go in to get my ten bucks but I don't want to seem cheap since I've known these guys for a while.
I don't know the volume of the enclosure that we ended up with on each side, sorry. Not really possible to determine since you can't pour water in them. But he did expand the cloth mat so that it swells outward once inside the speaker hole. There is plenty of air for a small JL sub which don't need a lot of air anyway. The bass is very tight and detailed. I love the kick these little subs give but it will never have the really deep extension that a big sub system will give but in my music I would never notice. Maybe if you're into low bass rap or pipe organs it might be a shortcoming. But it sounds great with a ton of music of all types. Everybody agrees that it sounds great. Once I get it on the RTA I plan on competing just to see how I fare in SQ.
From my experience 6x9 free air speakers do not sound good all bottled up in a sealed box. It really cuts the legs off of their base. You would probably be better off with a good set of front separates, your sub(s) and maybe some 4" rear fill in the very back spots running mono and with very little loudness. Just a nice ambient touch to make the car sound bigger inside.
I just spend 2 hours in my car listening to a bunch of stuff and wow, it really sounds good. It's pretty much all dialed in right now and I think even the most jaded listener would smile. I have a big bucks Mobile ES, Soundstream Reference, MB Quart, JL Audio system in my truck and the Camaro system is much less fatiguing. I'm very impressed by these Kicker Resolution speakers. They sounded like crap in the store on a soundboard but I heard a set in a car and they sounded pretty good. But set up properly with care given to tweeter placement and angle they just sound terrific in my car. Transparent, spacious, detailed, dynamic, the works. I've never looked forward to listening to a system as much as I do with this one. Sorry to blow my own horn here but I'm really excited as to how well this project turned out.

I don't have any rear filler speakers right now, which was why I was thinking of the 6x9's. I don't have the Monsoon system with the lil 4 inchers. Is there anything I can do with the box? I wanna keep the whole thing alpine, so do you think ALpine Type Rs are ok for the front? They seem pretty good. I think I found a car audio place that does custom work like that, but I gotta make sure.
I don't relly listen to heavy hitting music, so its OK. How would those subs compare to the 10" MTX Thunderform? Thanks
They won't go as low a the 10" MTX but in my humble opinion the sound quality of the bass is much better and the drum kicks hit just as hard. They have no problem pressurizing my cabin. But the MTX box will likely be cheaper in the end and that is a slick set up. (I wanted to keep my changer there so the big woofer was not an option.)
I've heard the Type R's in a car and I think they sound nice. At higher listening levels the mid's got a little irritating to my ears though. Overall they seemed like decent speakers to me. Alpine makes decent stuff. But if you want an honest answer I would not buy a set for my own use, but that's just my opinion.
So no rear speaker holse in the back of your car... Can you find those panels at a junkyard with the speaker holes? They aren't that big or in demand so I bet they wouldn't be expensive.
I personally would not use rear fill if I had to add boxes but that's just me. Rear fill isn't very important and just not worth it.

How about those kick panel speakers. I can use the door speakers and the kick panels as my fronts and have the jls run offf the 2 channel amp. I saw your site, and like oyu, I actually want to keep things in my trunk, which is why I like your setup. I also like the fact that it is hidden.
Very creative, don't think I've ever seen a setup just like that. I have heard that you can fit an 8"sub in one of the rear sails with some modifications. I'm not sure if I have seen pics though.
