Enclosure Volumes

I currently have a sealed stealth box with .5 cubic space of volume. I'm considering a sub that recommends .6 cu/ft of volume for a sealed enclosure. How will this affect the sub? Is is it still OK to use this sub in this box?

Sealed enclosures are very forgiving when it comes to mismatches between the sub and enclosure volumes. Adding a little polyfill will also help to fool the sub into thinking that the enclosure is a little larger than it actually is.

OK. Wouldn't adding something inside the enclosure reduce it's volume? How does that work?

Polyfill is like a wad of cotton. You lightly stuff it into the enclosure (don't compress it). The fill slows down the sound wave inside the enclosure which has the same effect as making the enclosure larger.

Lightbulb

Interesting. Any disadvatages to this? Is it relatively inexpensive?

The only disadvantage is if you compress the polyfill. It has to stay light and fluffy. If you compress it it has the opposite effect and will reduce the amount of internal volume in the enclosure. The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 to 1 pound of fill per cubic foot of volume. You can find it at any fabric/crafts store. It's used as pillow stuffing.
