Question Custom LS1 steering wheel radio controls?

A friend of mine has a newer LS1 Camaro with the radio controls on the steering wheel. Since they don't work with his aftermarket stereo system, he was interested in replacing them with fake buttons that say things like, smoke screen, oil slick, pass. eject, etc...

Does anyone have any ideas on how he can get this done? Should I post this in appearance instead? Thanks!

scrape the grey paint off I guess, place vinyl letters for what he wants them to say, paint around the letters, remove the letters and maybe it will work?
