Which CD Player?
I've had my Premier 630 for a year and a half now, and I love it. I was able to get it brand new for $240 shipped off of E-bay (NOT refurbished). Have never had a single problem with it, and lots of cool features for the price.
Sound quality wise, it isn't quite up to par with the unit it replaced, my Eclipse 5506 (was stolen). But, the 5506 had 8V preouts as well, and was a lot more expensive.
My roomate has two Premier P1-R's (couple years old, top model). Very nice w/ some awsome features built in. Only problem he has ever had is the faceplate motor is kinda messed up on the one in his daily driver (the one in his SS is flawless). He has had both for a while now. I also have a Pioneer 1.5 din unit (can't recall if it is P45 or 47, I'd have to look). Never have had any problems with it either, it is in my truck.
I've played with Alpines, but if I was paying retail, there is no way I'd buy a comparable model over an Eclipse. Online price wise...dunno, I sure like a lot of the feature these upper end Pioneer units are offering. The new 940MP is pretty sweet (Premier unit, IMO, always buy the Premier; cost is about the same, but you almost always get an extra feature or two w/ the same model Premier vs. the regular Pioneer).
I've got a fairly new Kenwood unit in my boat, and have played w/ some of their current model stuff....IMO, their menus totally suck, and I'm not a big fan of how the whole thing is setup in general. I'll give the CD player credit for rarely skipping w/ some of the major abuse it has taken on the water.
Sony....yuck; I like some of their home audio stuff, but their car audio is something totally different.
