CD changer problem

I have a Pioneer CDX-P1250 12 disc changer, hardwired to a Pioneer head unit. Had it for some years with no problem. Today, it suddenly started sounding funny. The volume is low, sounds like static, and scratchy. Sort of like one of those old Edison cylinder recordings. Head unit and cd player work fine. Checked connections and they're OK. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, or is it time to clunker it?

It's working again. Here's the theory. The day it was not playing right, was the day we got 6 to 7 inches of rain, in about 90 minutes. I put a strong light on the unit, and it looked as if the hatch had leaked, as there were water spots on the changer. Something may have gotten wet, and dried out. At least I hope that was the problem.
