Caps and coils question

Alright, I'm planning to use a passive xover setup for some speakers I just bought.

Since I'll use a single 2 ch. amp to take care of all this, I won't be using the built in xover of the amp but plan to use coils for the larger rear speakers and caps for the smaller 51/4" speakers. I'm undecided about what size rear speakers I'll use yet.

BTW this is not for my camaro but for my winter beater.

Does anyone know what value caps we'd use for 5 1/4" front spkrs and what coils for 6.5" and 8" woofers. (rears)

It doesn't have to sound the best but I just don't want to fry them.

If someone can educate me on caps and coils, I'd be greatful!

Thanks

The size of the speaker has nothing to do with what values of caps and chokes that you need. The impedance of the speaker and the X-over frequency is whats important.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish? Do you want to high pass, low pass or bandpass them? And which speakers do you intend to high pass, low pass or bandpass?

I guess I'd want to high pass the 5 1/4" in the doors so that they'd play 150hz and up and the 6.5" woofers in the back would play around 80hz and up.?

I'm experimenting with raw speakers which may even be for home use at 8 ohms. The 6.5" are JBLs and the 5 1/4 are infinitys which I believe to be also 8 ohms.

I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to passive xover but if I could get the fronts to play 150 hz and up and have the back 6.5s play at least 80hz and up, that would be fine. I believe those frequencies would be adequate for the power and speakers I got.

Natural roll-off is also my intention.

Thanks man

Look for a copy of Vance Dickason's "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook" for all the different formulas to use to make your own crossover filters. There's a wealth of info for DIY speaker builders in it.
