I could be mistaken, but hasn't mercedes come under some scrutiny lately, for their crappy product. I thought they just had a big recall too. It's like its only exceptable, to say such things about American Manufacturers. And yes it's true, ALL machines will break down, especially when not properly mantained. 
I think Mercedez had a huge recall with their new fancy electroncially acutated brakes(with a backup hydraluc system
) If you look inside a new S500 versus an old 90's model S500, you'll see that the plastics were of superior quality with the old body style. The new S500 does have a nicer swoopy layout, but falls way short on the overall level of quality. If I pay $80,000 for a car, I don't expect the door pull to creak and give when I shut the door.
