What's Going on in St Terese?

What ever happened to that plant?
Did GM ever move anything else in to be produced there?

Plant's boarded up. It probably has a date with the recking ball, eventually.

Damn, that sucks.

I would venture to guess that GM didn't own the plant then - probably leased it.

I sure would be nice if/when the Camaro ever does return that it could be made in Canada again.

Mabye there's a secret building project going on in behind those boards! Mabye they're building the 5th Gen plant in there and nobody even knows!

Ya right...........

Yup, hence the legal entanglement with the "Camaro" nameplate, it is tied into production at that plant (not the CAW). Rumor has it that the local province put up a substantial subsidy to get the required re-tooling for the F-body. My guess is that GM commited to a 15 year deal and couldn't deliver so we can't get a "Camaro" till 2006-7.

I read somewhere that most of the workers at St. Therese were near retirement age even the ones that were laid off prior to its closing. So GM just put them on early retirement and continues to pay there pensions.

My gut says the 5th Gen will be produced in the states on a shared platform. This plant might reside in Texas as that is the Camaro's best market and offers lower wages (compared to other manufacturing states).

You have to look at where the cars on certain platforms are being assembled. guionM has stated that at least one new plant is being built in Michigan for RWD applications. Where the market for the cars is highest is not a great factor I don't think. That wouldn't explain why Corvette is built in Kentucky, or why most cars aren't built in California.

Agreed. All signs point to that RWD plant in Michigan for 2006 or 2007... Assuming Camaro rides on the same platform...

Apparently, GM's legal people cautioned Bob Lutz & Kurt Ritter about naming a specific timeframe regarding the next Camaro (remember how they hinted one was in tghe works, then quickly backtracked & denied they say it), and also prompted the directive threatening to terminate anyone who spoke about Camaro (and also prompted the name change of 1 GM concept car). Not typical when union contract issues are involved.

Don't discount the lack of the right chassis's effect on Camaros "hiatus". GM evaluated & passed on the V-car chassis while Cadillac was finishing up Sigma, and both were rejected for different reasons. Even if GM planned to base it on the next Holden, it still wouldn't be available till 2006 either.

I'd be tarred, feathered, and banished to Siberia if I elaborated here.

I assume that we have not seen this concept yet, but will we see it in an upcoming autoshow?

No, it was GM plant. Naturally GM made efforts to bring some kind of work back into the plant, but nothing panned out. And yes, the workforce was rather old and most retired. Those not ready to retire were able to transfer to Oshawa, London, or St. Catherines.

We all would be willing to take that kind of risk.

I'll bet it's no so bad in Siberia once you get used to it.
The feathers can be picked off.........as for the tar - it'll wear off........eventually.
