Guy has also said in the past that he prefers to buy used to avoid the typical new car value drop after it rolls off the lot.

Although, I concede the coupe is not here yet, the sedan is, and if GM makes it, the coupe should come relatively soon.

CTS.... not necessarily a "mainstream affordable" car in the Malibu vein, but it does fall into the territory you mention - Infiniti, BMW and Mercedes. No coupe yet, but it's coming (not getting into all the stuff swirling around about GM's future here) and what a stunner it will be when it does arrive.
CTS is a good example as a counter to Mercedes Benz and BMW, but for one omission: The CTS is a full sized car, significantly bigger (and heavier) than a Malibu.

But I'll give you that one anyway...... though between the Mercedes C-class ($31,600), BMW's 3-series ($32,700), the G37 sedan ($33,200), and Lexus' IS ($31,155), the opening MSRP of the CTS ($35,975) is a bit on the pricey side next to the other names you can get for less.

Like I said back then, the subject was new cars, not used.

I'd add Audi A4 to that list (Although it is a turbo 4). My stepson has a 2007 S model and I'd consider a 2009 hands down over the BMW.

The CTS is on the large and heavy side compared to the IS/G/C/3. The base G8 would be another alternative. It is yet a little larger than the CTS, but no heavier, at least as tested by various publications.

The G8 doesn't meet his manual transmission requirement for the 6 cylinder, though. Only the G8 GXP is currently available with a manual.

I wish they offered the G8 V6 with a manual myself!

It's also not available as a coupe, now or in the near term like CTS, but otherwise yes the G8 could have been added as a consideration.... why not, heck, we're spending Guy's money here....
