What was the ONLY GM Brand to post sales increase year over year?
And thats exactly the problem right there . The market simply cannot facilitate all these "mainstream" brands in volume #'s . "If" Pontiac could have restructured its brand around variations of the G8 ( G8 sedan , ST , wagon and coupe ) , the solstice , and a small alpha 3 series type chassis to support a sedan and hatch , and have been able to sell a LOW but profitable pace , Pontiac could have been more viable . And definately would be deserving of its performance brand designation . Kinda sounds like that what Lutz was hoping to accomplish but could not get the ok . The only way Pontiac could have possibly been viable in TODAYS market is as a low volume brand supported by a portfolio of highly desireable niche type cars .
At least someone gets it.
There closing it.
Pontiac is the only brand to represent an increase in sales from August '08 to August '09 - and there's no other brand even CLOSE to touching Pontiacs sales performance for the month.
Pontiac sold an increase of 23.3% more cars than August '08.
For the year, Pontiacs sales are the "best of the worst" meaning every brand has double digit losses YTD but Pontiacs losses are "best" coming in at -30.5%. Chevrolet is the next "best" with a -30.9%.
What's GM thinking.

GM's thinking they want to clear out the Pontiacs at fire-sale prices, so they can move on. That's what they're thinking.
It's the current batch of products that killed Pontiac. They took all the volume cars that sold well 6-7 and either did not replace them, or replaced them with cars that sold less, and had new names. If Pontiac had better product..it would not be dead. Buick is here because GM had product ready to go for China..and it costs nothing to bring that here. Pontiac had awesome niche vehicles, but it's bread and butter was gutted. I am as big a fan of Pontaiac as it is. Honestly, it really has not set in yet that I will not be able to go buy a new Pontiac anymore.
However...IMO..if you mad at Pontiac going away, you should let robert.lutz@gm.com know what you think. He has been the product guy now since 2002, so the responsibility for most of the production in Pontiac showrooms rests with him..along with the idea to change the names.

btw I notice people were talking about pontiac not having a small fuel efficient car, like the G5, what about the Vibe?
I think the name change thing hurt ALOT with Pontiac... crap just with 1 car... The G6. There was NEVER any advertising, most non-car people have no clue who makes it. Just since owning it, people will get closer and go, "owe thats a pontiac" While the same person in a heartbeat knows what a Grand Am is...
I know the purpose to go to number designations, but seems like it was halfassed done and should have thrown in more advertising to help it out with such a large change. Yes the oprah thing helped but that was about it. People just thought the grand am stopped getting made.
Only time I ever saw it advertised was at Rolex 24, and the Oprah thing...

If anything, I think that's a testament to how anonymous it is. If it had stayed Grand Am, I bet it would have been more memorable and people would have known it was a Pontiac.
"Wow, that new Grand Am is really refined, I'll have to go check one out."
Vs. "The First Ever G6, what the heck does that mean?."

I agree with both of you guys
NOPE.
The changes to the Pontiac G6 for the limited 2010 MY run makes the car on the outside look WORLDS better. Today I was riding behind one and thought "wow that rear looks good..." then I got along side of it and no more "rub strips" or whatever they are called now along the doors. It was clean and had a new front end.
The car looked great.
As for those that say Pontiac isn't profitable let me ask you this and don't go by what you "read" but by what you know like I do.
How can the #3 brand behind Chevrolet and GMC -NOT- be profitable? Fleet sales or not. I'd love to hear how you KNOW Pontiac isn't or wasn't profitable.......
Other than listening to you puff up your ego about how great you are, do you ever post anything of value to this messageboard? Because I never see anything.
Personally, I'd love to hear how you know it is. Obviously something is wrong with Pontiac or GM would be saving it instead of killing it off. The most likely reason would be because it isn't profitable.

I've said things would happen here 2 years before they've happened. But - don't take my word for it, go ahead and search what I've posted throughout the years.
As for how I know what I know. There's a little thing called a FOIA...a Freedom of Information Act. GM went through court and is now owned by me and you.
Figure it out.

All I know is that the rebate on Pontiacs is much bigger than the rebate on Chevys.
