basically I have copied the most important part of what the conversation is. I guess one of his friends had a lunch with Lutz a few weeks ago and got some info, this guys pretty reliable and knows Lutz pretty well. And knows hes a car guy and likes talking about the new cars.
" I asked him about the new RWD platform that is on the way that will show up in alot of GM's lineup of cars. Lutz said it will be on many performance cars to halo or showcase GM's lineup. HE said GM has to get back into making a statement, thats where the American Revolution adds takes off. A new way of doing things, all those cars on that trailer mark something new for Chevy for advertising and sales but mostly for image. He goes on to tell me about more of the performance stuff. I ask him about a new RWD coupe. I said there was no performance car on their except the vette. He said GM has ideas now and he is confident that the car segment that it will fill will be more than ready for its introduction.
So I said is it possible to see the return of a f body. He laughed and said, I get that question alot now. He said all the new cars comming from GM will carry basically new names. I said what about the exsisting ones that might benifit from a new platform. his answer was that if its selling good and has been it will not change. The impala for example has been a leader in Chevy sales and it would be hard pressed to change that name. I said what about the Monte Carlo. He said we will see about that. Though the Monte does have a image to alot of people not just to sales but to the image at Chevy. we shall see on that. But for anyhting new we are trying to break away from the wanted retro names that we have at our disposal. So I said to him no possibility that a RWD coupe could have the name Camaro? he laughed again, and said I know where this is going. But as far as I am concerned the Camaro has a history to it that I think Chevy has had its run with and need a new direction. Like all of the new cars at GM. I said what about the GTO. He said well, Pontiac needed a flagship car and it wasnt retro in flavor just a name that identifies Pontiac. You hear GTO you know its Pontiac. Just like Corvette you say Chevy. Thats why somethign along the lines of Camaro wouldnt fit in with Chevy now. Or for that fact any other name we would want to resurect.
He goes on to say I am trying to do what we did on at Cadillac. All the cars now at Cadillac will be new and exciting with new names. you know its Cadillac when you see it. even with new names. I want to do that with Chevy. Chevy can have a RWD Coupe with another name other than Camaro. I asked him are you sure? He said hes 99 % sure he wouldnt let it go into production like that. I asked him about the internet chatter on the new RWD car looking like a Camaro. He said its all gossip sure it can "look" like a certain Chevy car. take a look at the SS concept. That study prompts you to think of many diffrent Chevy cars, Chevelle, Corvette, Camaro. So yes the car could look like it,has chevy heritage in it, I see nothing wrong with that, but calling it a Camaro. Not something I am willing to do. But I think it could follow in ite heritage. So I said what would you call it. He said we havnt gotten over that hump yet. when we do there are millions of names we can call it, even designations of numbers or letters. So I said there will be no RWD coupe comming from GM called Camaro in the next 5 years. He said no, no car named Camaro.

Pure BS and Conjecture....
Do you think GM would go through all this bs and politicing to demolish the plant only to name the car something else? Camaro is a very valuable name, too valuable to br ignored. Lutz is a car guy and knows that. If GM bought out the car that is being described to us...and named it something else eveyone would want their heads...and they know that. Even if this is what Bob Lutz said...he talks out his *** 90% of the time it seems. People need to stop listening to people who have a freind of a freind who's dad knows someone who works at a plant.
In closing it is possible the new car could not be called Camaro...but IMO it is still very unlikly.....very very unlikly.

These friend of a friend of a friend who knows Lutz stories get old quick. After waiting this long for the car and keeping the car's name hush hush for a long time, I highly doubt GM would just re-enter the pony car market with a car NOT called Camaro. Not to mention its the third most recognized name in the auto world. Until I hear some concrete information, real stamped in steel stuff, I'm still convinced that the "performance RWD Chevy coupe" will be named Camaro.
i hate it when news like this comes around april fools... it's hard to believe, yet, it isn't. i dunno what to think of this news... i guess ill get mad after april fools has passed and no one's said this was a joke
lol
lol
He says they don't want to use retro names, but not 3 months ago we got Pontiac friggin GTO of all things...talk about retro names! And Lutz himself pushed that project. Gotta salute the flag on this one

thats where I got to the believing its just b/s. When I think of chevy camaro, and vette are both at the top of the list. Camaro is as much a chevy as the vette if not more since it was the working mans performance car. Great april fools joke, close to believable but not quite.
