Re: VW's new ad campaign. Personally, I love it!!!!

Boy you kids couldn't have missed my point more if you were blindfolded.

These "funny" commercials don't make me want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a new car any more than the car commercials that YELL at you with the tons of reverb...."SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!!!!"

Sure I remember the commercials, but for the wrong reasons...they make me want to stay FAR away from whomever is selling whatever.

If you want to make people forget that you're trying to sell them an ugly little slow car, then make them laugh.....if you want to sell me a car...show me why I should go in debt for 3-6 years at hundreds of dollars a month...for a car that stirs my soul and makes me want IT not some gay little commercial.

Sure the commercials are "cute"...but then I'm not a Will & Grace watcher either.....

Guess you missed ours too. I don't care on what grounds you deem a commercial effective. In the real world, if a commercial makes people remember a brand name, and talk about that brand name - it is a smash hit success. Period, end of story, no questions asked.

Brand recognition is the beginning and the end of national ad campaigns. Possible rare exceptions being when the brand brings something that the majority of people will find to be truely unique and thus cause the commercial to 'stand out' based on the objective merits of the product sold, alone. Places where that's applicable are few and far between.

Last but not least - get a sense of humor. I'd almost think you're offended by these ads (or at least trying to look for a reason to be offended), by how negatively you're viewing them. At least they're somewhat funny and approach a subject (ricers) from a pretty unique/humorous angle (for an OEM at least). I like funny and original ads.

You must think you're talking to a 12 year old .....I know exactly what you're saying, any idiot knows about your little synopsis.... I'll refer to you from now on as 'Mr. Obvious'.

But you don't seem to be able to grasp WTF I'm saying.

If you're buying breakfast cereal, then maybe I'd laugh....but if someone is asking me to make a $30k+/- decision to purchase a new car.....try and at least talk to me as an adult.

These commercials are no funnier than SNL....when 90% of the "jokes" are gay based also....I personally am sick and tired of Hollywierd trying to pass off Gay lifestyles as mainstream and acceptable....much less entertaining and "funny".

Bottom line...these commercials are about what I'd expect to see from a car company that is trying to sell horribly ugly and slow cars.....I'll be the one laughing at the morons who actually buy them.

See, I do have a sense of humor.

Uh... might wanna look back see who first started talking to who like they were talking to a 12 year old before you start acting hurt.

But you don't seem to be able to grasp WTF I'm saying.
Yes, that's it. Because you're deep, and so is your theory. So, so deep.

Some people feel that cars are more of an emotional purchase than a logical one; humor is an emotion. These commercials appeal to that emotion in some people - 'nuf said. People like you don't buy cars based on commercials anyhow, so why does this commercial's effectiveness on you, as a singularity, even matter?

What the hell did I miss? Gay? There's absolutely no gay humor or gay undertones here... you feeling OK?

Bottom line...these commercials are about what I'd expect to see from a car company that is trying to sell horribly ugly and slow cars.....I'll be the one laughing at the morons who actually buy them.
Here's where the truth comes out. I mean, I already knew the truth, but I was just waiting for you to say it so you wouldn't deny it. You don't like these commercials because you don't like the car. Not the other way around, as you seemed to be attempting to convince me.

See, I do have a sense of humor.
Musta missed that part.

Re: VW's new ad campaign. Personally, I love it!!!!

Guys, Doug's point is that funny alone doesn't make him want to run out and buy a VW. There's merit to that. The "soap" commercial didn't make SSRs sell any faster (though I wonder why an outreageous vehicle like that needs a commercial anyway).

But IMHO, the case of VW's take on "unpimp my car" is geinus. It takes the garish ricer cars and makes them look uncool & lame, and does it in a way we all have been thinking for years. Not only is this halarious, but it's also seeming to resonate with people.

While a funny commercial isn't going to do much to get someone to cough up $40K for a retro-truck, it does hit the mark for a $20K pocket rocket.

Commercials also create an image, and the GTi commercials do that effectively. Kind of like that old Pontiac Trans Am WS6 commercial from the late 90s that actually ate another car, or that GTO commercial that purposely missed all those green lights waiting for an unsuspecting BMW to pull up.

Mr. Obvious.....if you don't have anything intelligent to say....try to respond to someone who gives a damn about your little self inflating drivel...I don't. I'll just choose to ignore you from now on...

Guy at least, gets it....but these commercials are just tired old re-runs of Wiley E. Coyote antics....yawn.......

Re: VW's new ad campaign. Personally, I love it!!!!

you also have to realize that the 40k truck commercials were for a totally different audience than these GTi commercials. the GTi commercials hit it perfect with the audience they were designed for, the younger kids that don't have $40k to spend on a new vehicle.

maybe doug is just some crotchety old guy who doesn't understand pop culture?

... or is this just a simple case of "its not a 5th gen, and its not GM, therefor it sucks by default" ?

I'm old enough to be tired of being asked to spend my hard earned money by simple minded attempts at "humor".

Pop "culture" reminds me more of the scum under the toilet lid....

LMAO - looks like I hit the nail on the head with my last response. Especially the part about your "bottom line".

Maybe I'll call him "Baby Gramps".

Link to commercial? I don't see anything like a blonde German dominatrix when I look at their site.

It is a cool site though.

Mr. Obvious,

Enough with the ad hominem attacks on someone who doesn't choose to drink the koolaid around here.

I expressed my opinion about mindless advertising being offensive to adults like me. It seems that you can't grasp the concept that not everyone is the same age as you and needs to be "entertained" into spending your $$ on a crappy little car.

I put these commercials in the same trash heap as the loud, obnoxious, reverb filled screamers on Sunday night TV.

As far as "the unintelligable babble " and "very egocentric"....you are the king of this.

But hey, don't let me ruin your enjoyment of things that speak down to your level.

I'm not even trying to get into the fight here but, Last night when I was in class (working on my 2nd degree) A girl in my class was talking about these commercials. She said she'd have to go and drive one. So, my point is. Like it or not (I think they're funny) these are a huge hit. I laugh when I think of that guy saying, "V Dub" LOL, I love that. I am not going to buy the car but, it makes us take notice.

For example, we are discussing VW right now. Marketing complete. BTW, my
2nd degree is in marketing.
