But yeah, as mentioned, I don't really believe in quoting 'best case scenario' times for a car unless you yourself ran then with YOUR car - I think quoting your best time or the average time for the average driver of your car is being more honest.

I could see 14.9 out of a couple since there were a couple V6 f-bodies who did it and the power to weight ratio is very similar.

I am with HAZ-Matt on this. I see this car as being on aveage a 15 second car. With the infamous GTI chip upgrade would be on this thing running just in the 14s. I still don't think a 250hp one is going to break into the 13s on street tire; its power-to-weight still isn't that mind blowing, and its gonna be really hard to launch with the front tires.

Why don't we all just race AE86's?
When I was playing around with it, I optioned the GTI up to nearly $33,000. There would be no way that I would consider that car for that much. If I had to have a GTI I think the only option I would order would be DSG ($23,065) and maybe leather ($26,225). It seems kinda pricey with the leather, too bad the cloth seats look really dumb. If I was going to be in the low 30's for a new car purchase, I think I would go GTO.

I just loaded one up with every option I saw except for the 18" wheels (and lets be honest... almost every brand has overpriced add on wheels available from the factory or dealer)
-6-speed DSG Automatic
-XM
-Sunroof
-Sunshade
-Climatronic auto climate control
-Heated seats
-Leather
-Dual power front seats with dual lumbar
-Heated washer nozels
-6-disc changer
-DVD navigation
Total sticker price with destination: $28,655
Now that still seems high to me, but I have no idea where you got 33k, which would be more comparable with the GTO if you didn't include the DVD nav or DSG auto, which brings the car down to $25,780 w/ dest, though that also includes XM radio (which I don't see an option for on the GTO... port installed or is it standard?) and a couple other options that are not available on the GTO.
The total sticker for the GTO is $33,290 with destination.
So not only is the GTO not really comparable to the GTI in many ways other than # of doors anyway, but you're talking nearly 10 grand more when comparing apples to apples equipment wise.
Re: VW's new ad campaign. Personally, I love it!!!!
Sigh, it doesn't let you do redundant options. But it was in fact "fully loaded." Where did you price that car at? I did this in the joyride car creator.
Body kit
Sunroof
18" Vision wheels
Red/White GTI valvestem caps (only $15 for the bling bling!)
Leather seats (which require sunroof, sat radio, dual zone climate)
DVD NAV radio (We're at 31 now...)
I Pod adaptor
GTI Floormats w/ red piping ($31,295)
DVD Dual screen (this is where the number came from $32,940)
If you go crazy on the cargo options you can get that up another 1500 bucks.
And a big "No crap" to the comment that they aren't in the same class. My point is that a "hot hatch" should not be in the 30's. You would have to be smokin something serious to want a little hatchback for that much money (or maybe you are one of the nutballs that loves VW and lives in some crappy city with no parking). Granted the GTO wouldn't have some of the electronics, but then again the VW doesn't have a 400HP V8 or RWD.

I believe the Ad agency who's now doing VW's commercials is the same one who did Mini's ads for the last few years. The person who headed up BMW Mini's marketing department left last year to VW and then convinced VW to hire the ad agency MINI was using.
Mini will in fact be using a new Ad agency when the ALL-NEW 2007 Mini's get launched later this year.

I did mine at VW.com
I did leave off the 18" vision wheels ($750) and rubber matts ($185)... I don't really consider those 'loaded' options... more like for the aftermarket mod crowd - the kinda crap that Scion thrives on. Take a 13k dollar car and make it 'fully loaded' by adding some overpriced superficial 'mods'.
But body kit, dual dvd screens and so on aren't listed on vw.com... I don't think most people consider overpriced port/dealer installed accessories to define "fully loaded". Toyota will install a supercharger on your Camry or Tundra under warranty and everything.. I know some GM dealers will lift your brand new Silverado... but most people don't consider port options like that to be required to say a vehicle is "fully loaded".

Compare the basic 22.5k dollar (with dest) starting price equipment of the GTI to the basic equipment found in a 21k Cobalt SS/SC - within 1.5k bucks of each other and the GTI still has a couple of features not standard/available on the Cobalt.
That's not to say GTI is a great deal IMO... in fact I'd never buy it (lease maybe, with the right offer)... but just to say that it's not that outlandish. It's only when you start piling on a load of options not even offered by any of its competitors that you start reaching a price range where it does not belong in.
Re: VW's new ad campaign. Personally, I love it!!!!
Back on topic (it IS "VW's new ad campaign," not "pissing match about pricing and quarter-mile times"), the new campaign is absolutely brilliant.
Brilliant.
I mean, really. VW has no chance of being in the pimposphere. I salute them for having the ***** to take on these overwrought palaces of bad taste on wheels--in no uncertain terms. And, it reinforces the one thing they can claim, which is the cachet of German engineering (again, regardless of the reality).
And the acting is great. I really wish I'd cast Wolfgang. He's PERFECT for the role. Helga ain't bad, either.
I mean, come on, guys. I don't want to run out and buy a GTI, but these commericals cut through the crap, have some real content, and to CHANGE THE TONE from "pimping" to "unpimping." I had doubts that CP&B could do it, but they did.
