Perception is something manufacturers work hard to cultivate positive perception of their products.
In my own personal opinion, Toyota had benefitted perceptionwise regarding their product's dependability and not styling or innovation with exception of, maybe, the Prius.
I don't see that Toyota has handled this skillfully from a PR standpoint. In fact it has been anything but skillful, IMPO.
I don't know if "face" is playing a part in this but I will suggest that "face" plays a bigger role in eastern culture and in eastern business culture.
Particularly in Japan.
I betting things are very wierd in the hallways of Toyota at this point.

I noticed that too. That, and the Prius which has been involved in more than one of these incidents.

100% agreed. They've had ample opportunity to fix these problems and instead swept them under the rug. They obviously didn't learn anything from Ford's mistakes.
