Toyota muscle cars?

In the IS350 thread, it's amazing that no one was awed by the fact that TOYOTA is making a 280hp 3.5L sedan called the 2005 Avalon. The car starts at $26.8K and goes to $34K for the top end model MSRP. Toyota dealers deal as much as the next guy, meaning this car can be had for invoice.

Most large car sites are claiming 0-60 in 6.6s. That's a 14 sec car easy. In big sedan that'll carry 5 adults in comfort.

Oh factor in the guaranteed Toyota resale value, quality, and 22/31 mpg.

Looks like just when the rest of the car world might be able to catch its breath, the Toyota juggernaut comes barrelling through again.

I've made reference to the Avalon in the Buick threads, but I didn't refer to the "detuned" 280 horsepower rating of the 3.5 liter in this FWD application. The most interesting think about the new Avalon's new engines is that we can expect the same 3.5 liter in the next-generation Camry - which will be here before too long.

There's a chance that the 280hp V6 will only be available in a performance model of the Camry (SE? Touring?), and we'll see a carried over 230hp 3.3 in other models.

ROTFLMFAO......You just used the words "Toyota, 280hp, sedan, 0-60 in 6.6, 14 sec" in a thread using the word "Musclecar" as a description...and you're wondering why none of us are "awed"?!?!

Tell me you're joking.....................you are, right?

What a fuggin' joke!

That would have been pretty slow in the 90's, pretty good in the 80's, fast in the 70's, OK in the 60's, but today? Nope. That's like a 14.8 or so 1/4 mile. L98's and 5.0's shouldn't have trouble with them.

Here's the real joke. The majority of LT1, 5.0 and mid '90s 4.6 stuff is going to get a snoot full of Avalon ULEV exhaust in a street race.

Fullsize American muscle? ImpalaSS, Marauder no chance. Only the 300C Hemi can outrun the..... Toyota Avalon?

Isn't that funny? BWAAAAHHHAAAAAAA!

I have a mid 90's 4.6 that'll take that challenge.

Re: Toyota muscle cars?

The car has FWD, right? And probably many weighty amenities too?

Not a musclecar. A nice sedan, perhaps. But I'll shop Caddy for that.

Re: Toyota muscle cars?

It doesn't really get my heart pumping (then again, its suppose to do the opposite), but my parents will love it. More hp, while improving the plushness and refinement of the Avalon, at about the same price I believe? whats not to like.

It will be intersting to see how the Impala SS with the 5.3 V8 fairs in 0-60.. I'm betting it will be no contest for refinement though.

I wouldn't call it a Musclecar though... just a faster Toyota Avalon... Instead of running away from one, you'll be jogging away from one.. older cars may only be walking away at best!

Re: Toyota muscle cars?

Soooo...what exactly makes an Avalon more of a muscle car then...say...a 2005 Impala SS?? Power is increasing in all models...

Anyway...I don't think it's going to "kick the snoot" out of any LT1's...or even 4.6 Mustangs for that matter.

Welcome to 1996 Toyota

The 240HP Impala SS is already a 14.4 sec car. 2006 Impala will have a 245HP midrange and 303HP/323tq top engine.

Impressive for Toyota....yes, impressive for the FWD Sedan market...NO. Nissan has been making 3.5L FWDs for years now. Acura has a 270HP FWD for just over $30K and GM has been making S/C 3800, DOHC 4.0L and Northstar FWD cars for even longer. 14's in a large FWD is nothing new.

No offense, but you are stuck on this car, that isn't inspiring at all. You want me to be awed by 280 hp? Don't think so.

The LT1 camaro came with more power, and the camaro had it since 1993! The LT1 easily run 5.6-5.7 0-60. That's a full second faster than your Avalon, and that's only 0-60. A LT1 will have an EASY time with an Avalon. You keep thinking otherwise, and then let us know when that Avalon even cracks into the 14's.

Oh yeah, and it starts out at 3560 lbs.

Dan

Re: Toyota muscle cars?

Just curious because I'm thinking that despite being a hefty boat it still was fairly quick

Is it possible, perhaps, that the post's author is silently laughing at all of us for taking this seriously? I think we've been had.

The majority of LT1's?? How about no LT1's. You're not very smart are you

Besides, it's not impressive that 13 years after the lt1 fbody was debuted that the avalon is now making 280. It still has nowhere near the torque and probably nowhere near as good of a powerband.

I'll take a 300c you can have your gehy avalon
