They didnt just do it because of resale, althought that is part of it. The major point is that you dont make any money on fleet sales. The Avis' and Hertz's get the cars basically just over cost due to the fact that they buy 50k of them. Overall sales dont really say much about a company other than they make more cars. Ford is more concerned with makling less cars at a more significant profit right now. They purposely downsized the company last year with all of the buyouts. This is exactly what has been expected. What nobody ever reads in the news is...

- Ford, Mercury and Lincoln crossover utility vehicles set the pace in the industry’s fastest-growing segment with a gain of 62 percent in 2007 – more than triple the industry-wide growth of 17 percent.

- In its first full year, Edge exceeded the company’s original sales forecast by 30 percent.

- Lincoln had the highest sales increase (9 percent for the full year) among luxury brands in 2007, driven largely by the new Lincoln MKX crossover and Lincoln MKZ sedan.

- The Ford F-Series was America’s best-selling truck in 2007 – the 31st year in a row. F-Series also was the best-selling vehicle – car or truck – for 26 years in a row.

- Sales of the new Ford Focus climbed 3 percent in December (9 percent at retail), building on its 18 percent gain in November.

- Edge ended the year with its best-ever retail sales month.

- SYNC-equipped vehicles are turning much faster than non-equipped vehicles, indicating SYNC truly is resonating with customers and helping to elevate consideration for our products.

Ford is doing great things, they just arent getting credit for them because as far as the media is concerned, bad press gets read more than good press, unfortunately you wont read about the Tundras failing camshafts, driveshafts, or tailgates, or how the camry v6 was taken off motor trends recommended list, or how ugly the new corolla is... its a shame
Still a company headed by morons and asshats more concerned with the bottom line than any sort of vision for the future - in short old detroit business mentality. They might have two good people in the comapny (Mulally and Farley) the rest should be burned alive and ground into something useful like foot powder.

They did outsell Chevy. But GM offers much more than just a Chevy for every segment.

Toyota is claiming the Toyota brand outsold the Chevy brand by adding in the Scion Brand. Which is complete crap.

I haven't been interested in anything I've seen from Ford or Toyota in quite a while.

Didn't GM used to count GEO in with Chevy and claim they outsold Ford? Its the same dealership and all.

The difference being that Geo was not its 'own brand'. It didn't have a separate marketing strategy. It was more of a sub-brand (like Denali is now). Scion is very much marketed differently than Toyota.

Well Im not sure if youve heard any of the future plans for Ford, but there is a lot of stuff inthe pipeline for the future, both powertrain wise and vehicle wise. I dont feel I should be footpowder either, but if you say so... Ford had a rough time, there were alot of old idiots here, but thankfully, they all took buyouts!!! The future Ford really has me excited

That's good! I hope Ford can turn things around.

I'm looking forward to seeing some good products come out of Ford. It's been a long time since they had more than one or two cool vehicles, and they haven't even consistently had that.

Haha thanks! I am by no means a big Ford flag waver. Im the only kid in the parking lot with a GTO and Grand National (lots of flack for those)

It just irks me when people fly off at the mouth talking crap about stuff they obviously know nothing about. Im not going to lie, even I wonder about how some of this stuff got released, the new focus for example. I really wanted to euro model. But dont worry, the new execs have been asking the same questions it just takes time to pump out cars and everything will be aligned soon enough

There was alot of dead weight here, I used to work for some of it. people who would print out emails in order to read them...idiots. Thankfully, the buyout process got rid of pretty much all the old folks that adhered to the 1972 business plan.

what does ford have coming down the pike that will turn it around?

serious question, as buying F stock at this point could be quite a buy if they do indeed make an even half way decent turn around.

Man I hope so, it would really be nice to see some thing to look forward too, and as far as future plans, nope. I just seem to read about a company that is about 6 or more years behind GM in turning the ship around and getting the idea through their heads that offering great product is what makes money in the long run.

I wouldnt say 6 years. We were about 3 years behind, but being a smaller company now, we can do things faster. There are alot of internal efficiencies being made and beurocracies being dismantled. Id say right now were probably a year and a half behind GMs turnaround, but weve got alot of really cool stuff in the pipeline that I dont think even GM is doing. Its not as bad as everyone thinks. We just seem to get alot of bad press for some reason
