Think G8 is dead?....... Think again.
I think right now..GM's goal is to do and say whatever it takes to not be bankrupt next month. Everything discussed here is a hypothetical at this point untill it's decided who will own what share of GM, and a new board is appointed. Hell, with the union being a major shareholder...maybe the idea of building a 4 door Zeta at Oshawa comes back to life?
Both Holden's plant and Osahwa have been retooled in the last 3 years. Whoever approved the idea of letting them make the same platform with completely different build processes should be out a job.

It should be noted that it wasn't the aussie dollar that was the problem. The US dollar deflated then inflated. The aussie dollar was fairly steady, it was the US dollar being unstable.

True. But the MT story in question is especially chock full of fabricated BS and unfounded speculation - kinda like the GoAuto story which starts this thread.
Wow, lots of information and speculation here.... my head is spinning. Assuming the G8 is re-imported as Lumina or Impala or Caprice or heck, Commodore, I think I'd be a happy camper. While it sucks to be looking at a 2012 timeframe, it's better than not at all; and 2012 works better for me since it would be a whole lot closer to realistically replacing my car than now.
As for the police cruiser angle, GMHTTP had a pic of a Commodore in police garb - that would make for a nice cruiser, but the G8 as a cruiser seems a little too stylish for an interceptor. A cruiser that can go and handle crisply, that's a scary proposition given the floaty, grandmother ride of the Crown Vics.

theyre going to have to build them here before they will buy them for police usage...
Cops wont deal with the GTO-esque parts shortages.
Aww crap a cop got rearended, just park his car in back for 4 months while we wait for a bumper

If anything, the G8 should come back as a BUICK IMO.
Buick needs ALL of the help it can get if it is to survive without Pontiac volume.
(Unless the new dealer channel -- Cadillac/GMC/Buick -- saves it from having to sell volume)

I don't understand the concept of helping the weaker brands with the best models? Chevrolet is the strongest GM brand. It deserves the best product, period.
GM has it's best chance of re-inventing itself now. I don't think Buick is an essential GM brand for the NA market any more.
Sell Buick to the Chinese for a premium and make Chevrolet GM's international brand, now that Opel is looking more and more like a distant relative with each passing day.

Buick is a Chinese brand. More Buicks are made and sold in China than in North America. All new Buicks (including the new Lacrosse and upcoming Regal) are done in China save the interior, and like Ford's upcoming European developed new small cars, we will simply assemble versions of them here in North America. Even if sales are only mediocore (again, like Ford's upcoming new small cars), it's still profitable.

Seconded, I'd go for a Chevy verison of the G8 before I would a Buick - especially a G8 based wagon or whatever Chevy would call it.
