IS anyone thinking about the new America built GTO/chevelle ?? They need a platform, and pretty damn quick. I can see that car shortened a little bit with a GTO badge on it.

Chevelle and GTO will be the same car. I also wouldn't be suprised if there is a new Buick off this platform...maybe a new GN or GSX???

The front facia just screams an evolution of the 4th gen Camaro to me...plus the windshield is at a 2 degree angle, which also says Camaro. I can't beleive their not gunna cut off 2 doors and NOT call it a Camaro...I don't see why some of you DON'T like it. Besides the weight, but wtf, is a prototype.

Because it looks terrible. Who wants an LS1-like front bumper to continue??

I think the RWD Monte bout squashes any hopes of a Chevelle ???? They would virtually be in the exact same class . Todays market is nothing like when both cars used to be built at the same time .

Wouldnt it go something like this for 05-06

Monte Carlo / Impala

GTO / Grand Prix

?? Regal / GSX ??

....in a Monaro/Commodore kinda way .

I was just planning to start a thread on this subject this morning when I had some down time later this morning.

GM has pretty much determined that Monte Carlo will continue, and since it will have a V8, it won't be considered slow. That seems that the Chevelle idea is toast. I know that back when the Monte's future was less certain, and a 5th gen seemed to be married to it's future, the Chevelle name seemed to be taking on a life of it's own. Now, fortunately, it seems less likely.

I've come around against naming cars from past models because people in general (including enthusiasts) are actually pretty clueless as to the actual history of cars from the past.

It took months for people to begin to realize that GTO was historically an engine package on an economy and midsize car, some still want to argue against the fact that the Impala name before 1994 represented fleet, police & rental cars, and most hysterically comical to me, someone actually wanted the Nova to come back "if done right", seemingly oblivious to the fact that Novas were lower on the totem pole in it's day than Cavaliers are today (RP will gladly share a story of how those "427 Yenko Novas" had a tendancy to twist itself in half!).

Even the Monte Carlo isn't immune to revision. It's never been a performance car, except for a brief stint in the early 80s as an SS (which still took about 8 seconds to get to 60mph), and has always been a personal luxury car. Yet, not too long ago, someone actually said that it needs to go back to it's Muscle car roots.

The current Malibu is exactly as it's always been. A cheap midsize car. The Toyota made Nova of the 80s was exactly what it always was: a cheap form of basic transportation bought by women and people who bought cars as appliences. Yet, look at the outcry & the grief heaped on those cars for doing what they always have done.

So, though I once thought it was great to reach back for a little nostalgia in naming some cars, I now am dead set against it. It just leads to alot of whining & belly aching from alot of people who have a image in their mind of a vehicle that's different from what the vehicle really was.

Thanks guion, for the reality check.

Might I add some of the misconceptions I've noticed too.

"The Monte Carlo was a brutal muscle car of the '60s"......eventhough it was NEVER a musclecar, nor was it around in the 60's.

"All Novas were fast, most of them had big blocks"[/b].....NEWSFLASH....most of them were slow. A modern Cavalier would severely spank most of them. They were cheap transportation...and BB or high perf SB were verrrrry rare.

"SS".All SS's had 450 hp 454s (well, some had 427s). They all ran at least in the 13s". SS was a performance trim package most years. You could even get it on some 4 door, 6 cylinder station wagons. There were some brutally fast SS's....but for every fast one, there were 50 slow ones.

"Chevelles only came as SS 454, LS-6 with only two doors". For every one LS-6, LS-5 or L-78 Chevelle...their were about a gazillion (don't feel like looking up the production #'s), 6 cyl, or 307, or 4 door Chevelles.

Looks like Chev will have an "SS" version of everything--the Impala, Monte, etc. The new SS Impala and Monte will look about the same and get the ancient 3.8 L supercharged six, according to the "Wheels" section of the local paper. I guess this will be Chev's version, sort of, of SVT?

So, will the SS version of the SS be called an SS "SS"?

I understand that when the SSR gets a fake hood scoop, it will be called SSRSS.
