Offshore, GM soars with Chevy brand; GM Daewoo boosts sales, production

DETROIT -- Here's what was missed in the news about General Motors' distressed brands and sluggish U.S. sales: While GM sliced third-quarter North American production by 100,000 units, it increased Asian production forecasts by 100,000 units.
GM sales in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America have grown this year. And its engine for growth is Chevrolet, the venerable high-volume brand that has enjoyed a rebirth overseas.
While GM is trimming its product lineup for slow-growth brands such as Buick and Pontiac, it has expanded the Chevrolet line. The automaker has rebranded Daewoo-built cars and trucks as Chevrolets, and those vehicles are finding a market overseas.
From January through April, Chevrolet sold nearly 1.4 million vehicles worldwide, a year-to-year increase of 8.2 percent. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. "has provided a terrific source of product development capability that we really need," GM Chairman Rick Wagoner said at an analyst meeting this year.
Daewoo Motor Co. Ltd. was a bargain for GM and other investors. In 2002, GM spent just $250 million to take over the principal assets of the bankrupt Korean automaker.
Since then GM already has spent $1 billion to beef up Daewoo's product development and has earmarked an additional $2 billion for that purpose.
GM Daewoo expanded its engineering and design staffs and has 1,800 engineers and 80 designers, Ki Joon Yu, vice president of engineering for GM Daewoo, told Automotive News last fall.
With its bigger engineering staff, the Korean automaker will help GM's U.S. engineers redesign the next-generation Saturn Vue and Chevrolet Equinox SUVs. GM Daewoo also will have a chance to engineer GM's Gamma architecture, which is the basis for the Opel Corsa.
Here's how Chevrolet is doing in each of its major markets:
>> In Europe, Chevrolet sales rose 24.5 percent through April. The Chevy Kalos and Aveo are enjoying especially heavy demand in Poland, Russia and the Ukraine - price-sensitive markets that value low-priced transportation.
The brand also has found a niche in more prosperous western Europe. "Everything is growing fast, and it's all due to Chevy's startup in those places," says GM Europe spokesman Marc Kempe.
>> In the United States, sales of the Chevrolet Aveo are up 56.1 percent through May. Next, GM might import a sport wagon based on the Daewoo S3X, a small sport wagon concept introduced at the 2004 Paris auto show.
>> In South America, Africa and the Middle East, Chevrolet sales rose 19.2 percent through April. And GM Daewoo is doing more than its share. Jaime Ardila, GM's CFO for the region, predicts GM Daewoo sales will rise at least 50 percent this year. "GM Daewoo is the driver," he says. "It has been incredibly successful for us."
>> In Asia, Chevrolet is using Daewoo-designed vehicles to fuel its expansion. GM China assembles and sells two cars - the Spark and Epica - based on Daewoo vehicles. Now GM China is building a network of 150 Chevrolet dealerships to sell these and other vehicles.
Meanwhile, GM wants to purchase an assembly plant in India to produce a minicar based on the Daewoo Matiz.
GM insiders brag that Daewoo is their version of Hyundai Motor Co. - an automaker with a relentless ambition to expand. Before GM acquired the company, Daewoo ran into trouble when it expanded too quickly.
But now GM hopes to exploit that corporate culture to compete in the world's fastest-growing markets. "There is a real sense of urgency on the part of the management team," says GM spokesman Jay Cooney. "This opportunity doesn't come along very often."

Re: Some good news
Great find. I believe the future of GM is for "Worldwide" sales not just the USA. This shift to a global economy is going to cause GM to lose market share in the USA, but gain it "Worldwide."
GM, Ford, Dodge could have the HUGE market shares when they controlled the USA. But now we have foreign competition and look at the diversity of vehicles at our selection? I am an avid GM fan, but for some people GM vehicles aren't for them. GM does and is working on it's perception here in the USA and I see them gaining alittle market share back here in the next couple years.
But I see GM gaining Global Market Share at a faster rate then the USA. There's a whole lot of world out there. Interesting to see "Chevy" take off in Europe. It's kind of funny people value Imports over Domestics - good to know we're not the only ones.
On a side note, Everybody over here thinks a Mercedes is a "Rich" peoples car and "godlike". In Germany, they are just as common as Chevrolet here. Just like Chevrolet they have their own "Special" models for exporting. Not every Mercedes in Europe is an S-Class. They have bottom end beaters just like every other car company.
Nice Article!

Re: Some good news
Most Europeans see our Gas Guzzling V8's Trucks and Cars as crap. Compared with standard fare vehicles the Aveo fits right in over there.
The Aveo is a vehicle tailored for low income folk who are down on their luck and allows them to buy a "new" vehicle. What are you expecting out of this car?
GM will sell alot of these cars.

Guess as far as simple transportation, it's a hit.....especially with a base MSRP of a mere $9455....BEFORE any rebates or discounts!

I found it to be a competent mode of transportation. Adequate power and room for around town and short trips. Given the affordability, I would think this would be a good first car or a reasonable choice for an out of town college freshman.
The biggest problem reared it's ugly head the day I made a banzai cross state dash and back (about 300 miles each way). This car has an absolutely horrid seating position for anything more than a 20 minute hop. My right leg found the center console to extremely intrusive. When combined with a gas pedal that honestly felt like it was behind the center console...well you can imagine the discomfort.
On the plus side of things, it withstood my abuse without a whimper. Let me tell ya, I absolutely flogged the sucker on my cross state trip. I rarely dipped below 85mph and on the return trip, I routinely ran the little yellow lump in the 90 - 100 mph range on I-80 through the PA mountains. Even with my I'm-running-late-flat-to-the-floor driving style, it still gave me gas mileage in the low 30s that day.
Several things were learned.....
1) A previously unknown world of parking possibilities open up for you when you get out of a daily driver Silverado 2500HD 4x4 and get into an Aveo.
2) Driving an Aveo cross state at 90 mph is perhaps more entertaining than a similar trip in my autocrosser '96 Z28. Why? Well...the Z wouldn't even flinch at such activities while that Aveo was pushed right to the limit. Notice I said "entertaining", not more fun or more satisfying.
3) You get absolutely no respect from ANYBODY on the road when you're driving a yellow Aveo hatch back.
