Thumbs up So it's not just a fairy tale any more....

The Blue Devil DOES exist afterall

Blue Devil Lives!!

When GM's vice chairman speaks of an ultra-performance Corvette, we listen

BOB GRITZINGER
Posted Date: 6/29/05

General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz won’t confirm this car exists, but he is not saying it doesn’t. We first wrote about Chevrolet’s ultra-performance Corvette—dubbed Blue Devil, most likely to catch the attention of GM CEO and Duke Blue Devil grad Rick Wagoner—shortly before the sixth-generation Corvette debuted at the Detroit auto show in January (AW, Dec. 22 and 29, 2004). We asked Lutz about the car during a recent exclusive interview with AutoWeek.

“Let’s just say [Corvette chief engineer] Dave Hill is not a guy who likes playing second fiddle to any high-performance car on the road,” said Lutz. “My guess is we’re going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world.”

Lutz said the car may be delayed while the company focuses most of its engineering might on pulling ahead profit-making vehicles like its next-generation large sport/utilities and pickups.

“But there is certainly no lack of desire on anyone’s part to establish the supremacy of the Corvette,” says Lutz.

Spied on the Nurbürgring, Blue Devil appears to be living up to the earlier hype. Eyewitnesses said the car sounds supercharged, confirming reports the engine is likely a blown version of the Z06’s 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds.

Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2006.

Very interesting.

A supercharger on a Corvette would be a factory-first.

Carbon fiber all around... 600hp+2900

I wonder what else they may be tweaking.

I just want to see it. Between this car and the Camaro I'm getting tired of someone giving me a 'wink and a smile' and suggesting it's gonna happen.

Agreed.

But a Supercharged 7L? If they built it right, that thing is a pulley away from even more power!

I guess I had basically forgotten all about the BD since the Z06 turned out to be at least very in-the-ballpark of the Ford GT.

Its fair to say the Z06 exceeded everybody's expectations. A 600hp super-super vette would only be icing on the cake at this point. I'm actually not even sure its worth the trouble.

That sounds like an awesome piece of equipment and will look great on Chevy and Corvette .....

.... however, IMO GM's place in the world car order would be better served by the Cadillac Cien setting the world supercar standard.

I think its a waste of money myself.. as cool as it is, the BD is like the Ford GT about as useful as **** on a bull.

Z06 - friggin awesome, the best most unbelievable performance deal in the universe bar none

Ford GT - wow, who cant build a supercar for 150k

BD - awesome, for an extra 30k you get a supercharger and some carbon fiber, whipdee freak'n doo.

I disagree. I think it's 'bout damn time the General drops the ball and leaves the rest of the WORLD behind to suck down NOx....

Every day on this board I read about how the General needs to lead the industry rather than follow....what better way than to start with the 'Vette?

I totally agree. Not just cause I somehow find the car addictivly appealing visually, or that I've seen it in a GM TV commercial, or in the trailers for the movie "The Island" or anything like that.

If they wanted to do something crazy, try a Cien that was very lightweight, very comfortable and VERY fast.

I'd say have it aim at the Mercedes McLaren SLR. Even getting close would stir up some attention. You wouldnt build many, sure, but hey, its an idea.

Though I agree, a BD is neat in concept, at that point its some foofy hyper perfomance car thats in the end, still just a vette for $100k. I like the idea, and rather we get something - but you'll sell fewer Z06's these years then the C5's cause of the price. Why try to sell even fewer? Development costs might be very low, and I think that'd be the only excuse. Build a Cadillac for that price and see what happens, but if you cant afford the development costs, the Blue Devil works.

Or just do both.

Apparently the Italians and Germans.

Seriously, though, GM should do the Blue Devil. The new Corvette: taking down every other supercar in the world. Now, there's a statement that will get some attention.

It's time to lead.

God I hope so. I'm pretty sick and tired of upper management giving me that lip service while they trim asnd hacthet products to benefit their stock and personal pension returns.
